Newstead station obsession??

What is with this obsession from some people with providing a train service to Newstead?  I'm thinking of CRR2, TT's Bulimba line and the "Inner City Metro" official proposal.

The north side of Newstead has Bowen Hills, and the 300/305/306/322 bus routes aren't too far away.  Down near the old gas works there is obviously the CityGlider as well.  I can't see how Newstead needs a train station, and it is to the detriment of giving New Farm a station in some cases.

How does Newstead need a rail service?  Gas Works re-development and future development seems to be the only plausible reason, but how many people might live and work there?

Take a walk down there. There is a mini CBD going up in that area.

If it needed a rail service then they should have looked at that before they ripped it out, yes that right there was a rail line there before the shopping facilities came in. the junction used to be there between Brunswick st or whatever name it is now and the original Bowen Hills Station.

Groan  :-\

It's always the same old story. Rip out railway lines, rip out trams, and then a decade or two later... put in railway line, put in tram track (in the future, mark my words!).

I didn't think they ripped out the tram lines, I thought they just build on top? I could be wrong, I just vaguely remember being told that once.

But how useful would that junction have really been? Yes it would have a station in Newstead, but wouldn't it increase the number of conflict points? Unless it was grade seperated?

Would have been good to stop in Newstead, tunnel under the river, next stop Bulimba, Balmoral and enter the Cleveland line at Cannon Hill.  ;)

Why would anyone claiming to support the development of rail, not want to see such a line built - unless of course you work for the Premiers Dept/Translink or QR  :-r - Brishattan is not exactly overwhelmed with rail corridors! Bring it on!  :-t
SEQ, where our only "fast-track" is in becoming the rail embarrassment of Australia!   :frs:

Partly, it's in the OP:

it is to the detriment of giving New Farm a station in some cases.
There is also the problem of deviating CRR2 to provide the station, the sort of thing you may have noticed I'm not keen on because it slows things down.

IMHO the solution for New Farm might be a separate metro (just one option), the other option is surface light rail (the other option). Newstead will have tower style developments and office space, rail will support that.

IMHO LRT in that area (New Farm) is just waiting to happen.
When you need a bigger bus- get LRT!

Yes I agree, New Farm is literally gagging for it. Run light rail straight down Brunswick Street and up Merthyr Road on the New Farm part of the 199 route. The fares alone would pay for it.

But did that ever take passenger services? From what I've seen it was for freight to get to the wharves.

It was strictly a freight line with the exception of a couple of ARHS tour trips
