BOSSES say productivity is going out the window because of Melbourne's unreliable public transport system.

A survey by the state's peak employer body found three in four reporting disruptions to their businesses because of train delays and cancellations.

Victorian Employers' Chamber of Commerce and Industry chief executive Wayne Kayler-Thomson said unreliable public transport was adding costs to businesses, mainly because of employees late for work.

"From time-to-time, external issues will impact on business operations, and many businesses factor that in, but when cancellations and delays are occurring so frequently across the network, businesses are feeling the impact on their productivity," Mr Kayler-Thomson said.

"Many businesses, for example in retail, depend on a smooth transition of shifts, with staff arriving on time in order to open a store for a day's trading, or take over from other staff."
