METRO has launched an investigation into a serious safety incident that saw two trains heading for a collision.

The operator said safety back-up systems worked as expected to prevent a crash between the trains.

Metro spokeswoman Lanie Harris said an empty train left Flinders St station at 9am on Tuesday heading for Greensborough.

On the same line, a train carrying passengers was sitting stationary west of Jolimont station, Ms Harris said.

The driver of the empty train failed to stop at a red signal, and the train was brought to a halt by automatic emergency brakes, she said.

That train stopped between 120 and 150 metres before hitting the stationary train carrying passengers.

"The safety systems functioned exactly as they should have and brought the empty train to a stop," Ms Harris said.

'What if' the stationary train was instead a moving train at speed towards the other moving train... Would we then have 150 meters to spare ?
