I will generally thank the driver, UNLESS I am one of about ten people then I think it is a bit over the top.

I like it, it strikes me as one of the more civilised characteristics of Brisbane, like saying G'day to everyone I pass on a walk.  I particularly enjoy watching newly arrived international students learning to do it too - clearly they see it as good manners to learn the habit.

So - on thank you's, Bob - thanks for the new ferry smiley!

Many people do say thanks, cheers or something as they get off.  Some from the rear door.  It does no harm and is just a courtesy.  I can understand that sometimes it might get a bit annoying if everyone wants to chat to the driver, but that doesn't seem to be the case from my observations.

Feedback from a couple from the United States who stayed with me recently was that they were very impressed, in general with our public transport (compared to Minnesota) and the friendliness of people who thanked the bus driver and city cat ferry staff :) :-t

I appriciate the thankyous I get and an occasional pat on the back. I find it puts me in a happier frame of mind... I say thanks hundreds of times each day !!

Veering slightly off topic - I thanked the QR staff at Fortitude Valley station last week who were sweeping the stairs and mopping the platforms around 7pm. It is one of the cleaner stations IMO thanks to the dedication of the station staff. Unfortunately not all stations are cleaned so dilligently.

I always say thanks or give a little wave/nod to the driver. It just seems rude not to considering you either walk past the driver or have the driver staring at you via a mirror  :P

I usually try to say thanks, especially if there's only a few passengers leaving or if I'm exiting via the front door.  When I started using go card, I realised the reader takes some attention away.
