Article from: AAP

AN investigation is under way into how two men were killed in a rail accident in central Queensland today.

Police said the men were carrying out maintenance work on tracks about a kilometre west of Mount Flora Road, at Mindi, near Coppabella, west of Mackay, when the accident happened around 11am (AEST).

Queensland Rail's chief executive officer Lance Hockridge said staff would help with any investigations conducted by police, Workplace Health and Safety and the rail safety unit of Queensland Transport.

"This is a tragic accident involving two of our track staff," Mr Hockridge said in a statement.

"We will be supporting their families through this very difficult period in every way possible."

Counselling was being offered to staff.

Mr Hockridge said he was travelling to the site today to better understand how the accident occurred.

"This is a terrible event that cannot ever happen again," he said.

"My deepest sympathies are conveyed to the families of both of our staff."

Queensland Rail did not say how the accident occurred.
