Sportsbet tips Connex will suffer major disruption during the Spring Racing Carnival

A BOOKMAKER has rated Melbourne's trains as hot favourite for a meltdown during the Spring Racing Carnival.

Sportsbet challenged punters to place a bet on whether or not the Connex rail system would ?collapse? and leave commuters stranded on any day of the carnival, the Moonee Valley Leader reports.

Punters had bet $1600 in just 24 hours before all bets were off, thanks to the Northern Territory Racing Commission, which regulates Sportsbet.

More than 30 per cent bet on faulty trains while 4 per cent thought there could be a union strike.

The bookmaker offered 7-1 odds that Connex could blame a major disruption on inclement weather, 12-1 on ill passengers and 501-1 that Public Transport Minister Lynne Kosky held a ?picnic? on rail lines.

And 7 per cent of punters counted on an alien invasion to pay $10,001 for a $1 bet.

Sportsbet spokesman Mathew Stewart said the bet was ?satire? and in good fun. He said betting was suspended (last Friday) because catching a train was ?not deemed a sport or event? by the commission.

All bets would be refunded, he said.
