MORE than 1900 Brisbane buses were too full to pick up passengers last month and in nearly a quarter of cases, commuters were forced to wait more than 20 minutes for another service.

The latest figures released by Brisbane City Council show 1956 buses were so full they were unable to take on more passengers, mostly on routes 150 from Browns Plains to the city, 130 from Parkinson to the city, 199 from Teneriffe to Dutton Park and route 333 from Chermside to South Bank.

Public and Active Transport chairman Jane Prentice said bus patronage reached 6.13 million last month, up more than 250,000 trips from May 2008.

"Our BUZ routes are massively popular with commuters and the proportion of the fleet with air-conditioning has jumped from just 35 per cent to more than 85 per cent," she said.

The number of overcrowded buses fell from April this year, when 2057 buses reached capacity. Most overcrowding occurred between 7am and 10am.
