Mayor: Ipswich is Australia's fastest growing city

QuoteMayor: Ipswich is Australia's fastest growing city

Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale has proudly proclaimed the city west of Brisbane may be one of the fastest growing in the country after the release of Australian Bureau of Statistics showing over 6000 people move to Ipswich each year.

With a growth rate of 4.1 per cent, Ipswich was the fastest growing city in Queensland, ahead of Cairns on 3.9 per cent and the 3.4 per cent growth achieved by Moreton Bay, Torres and Fraser Coast councils.

Mayor Pisasale said Ipswich had "embraced change" to throw off the image of a coal mine town or Brisbane's smaller sibling.

"I think we recognised that the city needed to change and now we have matured," Cr Pisasale said.

"We've gone from the coal industry to one based on aerospace and high-tech."

"Ipswich has moved on to creating jobs in aerospace, clean industry and education with two universities and is a great place to raise a family."

"Ipswich is a city with a proud past and now the many years of planning and hard work by the community, business and all levels of government is creating a city we can all be proud of."

Cr Pisasale said the city of 140,000 people was well-positioned to navigate through the world economic downturn.

"The data released last Thursday places Ipswich in a position to maintain positive growth through 2009.

Far from being smug about Ipswich's rising star status, Cr Pisasale said Ipswich could now pull its weight in managing the growth of south-east Queensland.

"Queensland cities should be like the different parts of a building, shoring each other up, providing support and structure."

"Nobody should be saying `my city is better than yours', we all have to support each other."

"Ipswich is now ready to contribute its share, not only in terms of population, but also education, transport and services.
Half baked projects, have long term consequences ...

It might be time a high-speed rail link between Brisbane and Ipwich is investigated. I won't be too long before all us Brisbanites are commuting to ipswich for work every day!

Pasenger rail between Brisbane and Ipswich CBD's needs a 15 minute frequency, Brisbane bus services are adequate but could stand improvement but Ipswich public transport you are kidding, bus services on a hourly frequency on most routes, start too late in the day, finish too early and dont co-ordinate with rail and that is when they are on time.
Lots of room for improvement so perhaps Mayor Paul should consider taking over the bus services in Ipswich similar to those operated for Translink in Brisbene by Bisbane Transport.
We can but hope.

I thought there were plans for BCC to get out of the Public Transport game? Council Operated public transport is the way of the past. Translink needs to take more responsibility for bus services. I would not trust Ipswich Council to organise a teen pregnancy in Redbank Plains let alone usable public transport!

Obviously Butfli you have had little to do with either Translink or local public transport in the Ipswich area, I live in the area and have no choice but to use the local bus services.  A service operated by an Ipswich Council would have to be an improvement on the apology for public transport currently operating in the Ipswich area if for no other reason than vested local interest.
The services would still be under the control of that less than credible organisation Translink but as a council might have more influence on Translink than the current operator or the local community as individuals.
Any change short of the total removal of services in the area would be an improvement.

When I said Translink needs to take more responsibility for bus services I mean they need to own the buses. There are too many layers of public transport operators and the blame is easily shifted. If Translink owned all the infrastructure and all the funding came through the State Government then there wouldn't be so much confusion and so many differing levels of service.

And BTW, I never thought I would see an Ipswichian complain that a Brisbanite didn't really understand just how sh%t things are in Ipswich. :p
