So in effect they are turning on the cattle gates and go card users need to touch on to open the gate?

ozbob

On a typical day at Roma St on the go gates, about half are closed and remainder open.

I prefer the closed gates as it ensures that I have touched on/off as the case may be to pass through.

With these changes all gates will be closed.  Paper ticket holders will have a separate area to pass through and show tickets I guess.

This is great to see.  It is time we took a step into the 21st centry.  It is amazing to watch people day in day out just walk through the open gates with or without tickets...and the staff just stand by and watch.  Mind you only Roma Street, Central, Fortitude Valley and South Brisbane have the gates (that I know of).  All our stations need to be upgraded with proper and well designed stations including gates on all exits.

If Translink/State Government allowed Transit Oriented Developments to occur at each station then the developers could pay for it as well. It would also make the stations safer and the centre for local commuities. Instead QR only has plans for more car parking.

G'day Jon and Welcome!

Yes, the only way fare evasion will be brought under control is to move progressively to a closed ticketing system, particularly on rail.

As we move towards that direction we are hopeful that some new fares for the go card are on the way.  Then the real gains for loading efficiency (particularly for buses) and the ability to get virtual real time loading information which will help improve timetables and so forth means improved outcomes.

Some other stations have gates at the moment.  One I know of is Toowong.  There may be more.

Regards
Bob

all of the gold coast stations have gates aswell

Coomera Station doesn't appear to have them, or at least last time I went there (January 2009).  Helensvale had them.

All the gates had a green light this afternoon!  Noticed a few flyers being handed out.

The area allocated to the paper tickets looks as though it is equivalent to the present gate areas that have been open so all should be smooth.

Checked out the new arrangements at Roma St this morning at around 6.55am.

Go gates closed, except for a faulty gate Roma St end array first narrow gate.  Stuck on open, but QR Passenger Staff attending to ticketing requirements.  TTOs checking paper at both arrays.

Parkland array first narrow gate had some intermittent issues, opening and closing by itself  :-w
Other than those minor hiccups, all seemed to go well.

Queensland Police also handing out some literature on crime prevention tips, motor vehicle security and other items.

I enjoyed the uncluttered go run!   ;)

On the way through Roma St go gate array late this afternoon, one X on side, two X off side (all tri reader com error)

As expected quite a few punters waving paper tickets over the closed go gates.  Always gives me a lift on the way home ...  ;)

All working smoothly this morning.  No red lights  (well a few on the Caboolture line, but that is another story ..  ;) )

The first narrow gate was open again, apparently this will be done for the time being to help people with large bags and that.  Staff member attends that gate till 9am when it is then closed.

The same is happening on the Central Concourse from May 5, yesterday there were announcements at Central, messages on some of the screens and the area for paper ticket holders (no GoGates) opened up next to the ticket office.

Jumped off at Roma Street today to check it out myself.   I was amazed to see that the paper ticket section was not being checked at all whilst two Inspectors watched the gates like hawks.  This is hardly the way to convince people to use/convert to the Go Card.

Why is the approach to modern technology (the Gateway e-Toll is not different) one of "Only if you really want to".  I know there are issues with the Go Card not being as cheap as long term tickets butt he above approach to the Go Card is hardly world class.

Translink should fix the long term ticket price issues, implement Go Card only ticketing and stop sitting on the fence.

ozbob

TransLink says it will not be rushed into new fares and so forth.  Heck, they have had a couple of years already.

The situation is getting beyond farce.  I sometimes sit at Central and watch the fare evaders scoot around TTOs at open go gate barriers.   I have reported these instances but no one seems at all concerned.  Often the gates are failed as well.

Another go day ...
