New Dual Gauge Platform Open for Trains

RAIL ? Back On Track (http://backontrack.org)  a web based community organisation for the promotion of rail throughout Australia has congratulated the Queensland Government, Queensland Rail and Contractors on the opening this week of Platform 3 Roma St for Standard Gauge trains.

Robert Dow said that

?The dual gauging of Platforms 2 and 3 for 3'6" (Queensland Railways gauge) and 4' 8.5" (standard gauge) at Roma St is a SMART state move!  There is now the opportunity for running standard gauge commuter trains from Bromelton utilising the standard gauge line.  The track configuration at Roma St now allows trains to terminate and locomotives to run around as necessary. A regular commuter service on this line would expand public transport options to suburbs that do not have ready access to convenient transport to Brisbane City.?

?Recent surveys have placed Brisbane as one of the worst State Capital cities in Australia for public transport access. Utilising the standard gauge rail corridor will help to increase access for more citizens. RAIL Back On Track calls on the Minister for Transport and Main Roads to develop an implementation plan and seek suitable rolling stock as a matter of priority.?

On my way through Roma St this morning (14th July 2007) I managed to get a photo of the XPT on the gauntlet track Platform 2 Roma St. This platform is dual gauge 3'6" and 4' 8.5" (gauntlet), next across is platform 3 traditional 3 rail dual gauge.

I think this might be the first revenue service on the new configuration.
