Tasmania: Support for suburban rail plans for Hobart

RAIL ? Back On Track (http://backontrack.org) a web based community organisation for the promotion of rail throughout Australia has congratulated Hobart City Council for their decision to commission a report into a commuter rail service to link Hobart to the northern suburbs.

Robert Dow said:

?Rail is the sustainable environmental solution. Clean and economical it affords rapid mass transit free from road congestion and chaos.  Reinvigorating Hobart with sensible rail commuter transport is planning for the future.?

?Hobart will join the Australia wide rail renaissance now underway.?

?Existing heavy rail infrastructure can be utilised with a few additional modifications and refurbishment, this provides a sound basis for early roll out.?

?Consideration should be given to using hybrid diesel electric rail motors as well as electric/battery rail motors once services established.  Both of these would be well suited to Hobart in terms of distance and anticipated passenger loadings.?

?Regular tourist railway operations would also add to the local economy. RAIL Back On Track congratulates Council for their vision.?
