BRISBANE City Council has been forced to put smash-proof glass in the windows of their buses to prevent passengers from being hurt by rock attacks.

Public and Active Transport Chairwoman Jane Prentice said  anti-shatter plastic would be fitted on the windows of all new buses entering the fleet.

"We are also continuing to rollout CCTV systems on our buses," she said.

Cr Prentice said the fleet had so far this year reported 24 serious attacks, involving rocks being dropped from overpasses or flung from sling-shots.

Last year, 237 serious attacks were recorded against the city's bus fleet.

The extra protection for Brisbane's commuters comes one week after a truck driver was injured during a spate of rock attacks against trucks and ambulances in southwest Brisbane.

It is sad that as a community we are forced into these measures.

Lets reclaim our public transport!  (--> http://backontrack.org/mbs/index.php?topic=1969.0 )
