Queensland:  2009 State Election an opportunity for a sustainable transport future!

RAIL Back On Track (http://backontrack.org) a web based community support group for rail and public transport and an advocate for public transport users has welcomed the announcement of the  2009 Queensland State Election and we look forward to further development of the rail and public transport policies of all political parties and independent candidates.

Robert Dow, Spokesman for RAIL Back On Track said:

"RAIL Back On Track members will be focused closely on the rail and public transport policies of all political parties and independent candidates.  More roads and road tunnels are not going to be the sustainable solution for the transport woes of south-east Queensland."

"More use of the existing heavy rail network throughout the state together with modern light rail in the major cities will be needed.  Better integration of feeder buses to augment a sustainable, high frequency light and heavy rail network is the future."

"All existing railway lines throughout the state should be maintained and regular freight, livestock and passenger services put back into place where these have been removed."

"Here are some of the specific heavy and light rail priorities for a sustainable transport future in south-east Queensland."

"Which party will rise to the occasion?"

"Petrie to Kippa-Ring heavy rail line, long promised will it be delivered?"

"Darra to Springfield heavy rail line, preliminary work for the continuation through the Ripley Valley to Ipswich."

"A narrow gauge commuter line to be placed in the standard gauge rail corridor to Bromelton."

"Triplication of the main western line from Darra to Ipswich."

"Electrification of the main western line Rosewood to Gatton."

"Immediate continuation of the new duplication project from Caboolture to Beerburrum to Landsborough.

"Triplication of the main northern line through to Caboolture."

"Modern light rail is sustainable and is more efficient than bus rapid transit.  An inner city light rail network is needed in a modern metropolis such as Brisbane.  The Gold Coast rapid transit project needs to be fast-tracked"

"It is indeed time for a shift to a sustainable transport future!"
