Advice received from the Minister's office:

Translink has advised that Citytrain passenger demand has increased by 9.1 % across SEQ during morning peak periods between 2006 and 2007. During this time there has been a 6.1% increase in patronage on the Gold Coast line, 9.3% on the Ipswich line, 7.2% on the Ferny Grove line, 6.5 % on the Cleveland line, 13.5 % on the Caboolture line and 7.8 % on the Sunshine Coast line.

It is little wonder that folks are reporting more congestion on the trains.

The good news is that the new trains are coming, more crew are being trained, and new timetables are planned for March 2008 and September 2008.  We are suggesting timetable improvements, but until new units and crew are available major improvements in frequency will be scanty.

Of particular interest is the significant increase in patronage on the Caboolture line.  This will add to congestion on trains stopping at Brunswick St station during the construction work, as patrons transfer at Eagle Junction or Central.

Passengers need to be encouraged to move down the aisles of carriages.  More announcements to this effect by the guard on heavily loaded trains are needed.

"Put a smile on their dial, move down the aisle!!"

"Move away from the door, please make room for more!"

I HATE IT when people decide its ok to block the doors  >:( this happens especially when the footy is on, not just in the morning. They congregate around that middle hand rail right as you hop on the train and then act like you've just asked them to sign your 'testing on animals is ok' petition when you ask them to move down the aisle and make room for more ??? Ok.. i don't like overcrowded trains either, but the train isn't even close to overcrowded yet. There's clearly room to fit another 10 people COMFORTABLY in the train car... personally, i get the elbows out. Some people don't understand "please".. but an elbow to the gut i find is pretty universal.

*please note, no animals were actually harmed in this post* ;)
