WHAT was supposed to be a typical trip home from work turned out to be anything but for Ben Caffrey after he sat on hooks embedded in a train seat.

The 20-year-old mechanic left work early for a doctor's appointment and boarded the train at Darra.

?I basically sat down and there was a hook that had been put into the seat,? Mr Caffrey said.

?It wasn't showing and when I sat down I copped it in my upper thigh.?

He said the hidden hooks were a range of different sizes and buried in the train seats.

Mr Caffrey, who also scratched his hand on a hook embedded beside him, said it was a lame gesture by those responsible.

?I'm pretty p---ed off really,? he said.

?It wasn't placed there accidentally. No way.

?It was under the actual

vinyl itself.

?They had sort of slipped it under.?

The 20-year-old said he had kept his nasty discovery quiet at first in an attempt to gauge the reaction of fellow passengers.

?There were a couple of people around me and I tried to stay quiet,? Mr Caffrey said.

?I hoped they would laugh or something.?

Mr Caffrey reported his find to station guards when he got off at the Ipswich station about 4pm.

He said the find was also reported to police and officers reportedly stopped the train to search for more hooks.

Already on his way to the doctor for an X-ray, Mr Caffrey said he added tetanus and Hepatitis B shots.

?Anyone could have put it there,? he said.

?You don't know where the hook has been.?

Forced to use the train as part of his daily work commute, he said the incident would make him more cautious.

?I guess I will look where I sit more carefully,? Mr Caffrey said.

A Queensland Rail spokesman was yesterday unable to confirm the report.

This sort of thing can happen anywhere, yesterday it was a train.  I have noticed at times people getting on trains with fishing rods either going or coming from fishing, so it is possible that was inadvertent.  But, according to the person injured it does seem the hook might have been deliberately positioned.  If that is so, very sad and stupid act.  If it was just one hook, entirely possible that a rod got caught on a seat or something, if there were multiple hooks then probably result of a vandal's actions IMHO.

Unfortunately giving this incident press coverage will only encourage 'copy cat' activities by the brain dead.
Last week I caught the 1832 service ex Roma street to Caboolture (originating from Ipswich)
There was an uncapped hypodermic syringe placed between the cushions of a 2 seater.
The train was delayed at Bowen Hills whilst the object was removed.
Makes one more cautious when plonking down into the seats at the end of a busy day!!!

Surely it should be possible to track down these brain dead vandals by examination of the tapes of the CCTV cameras fitted in the carriages, then they should face the full force of the law with compolsory jail time during which they should the face a mental health assessment abnd if considered to be a further risk to the community should then be committed to an appropriate instution for treatment of their obvious mental disorder.

I always get my foot and sort of push the seat tot check nothing is embedded in it.I personally love the new IMU/SMU train seats as they are extremely hard .WHen he asks to see the CCTV footage it will either be faulty or not installed on that train.

This sounds like the work of the same brain dead morons who scratch the windows and graffitti our trains and stations.
