Stations on the rail network in SEQ Queensland that have changed names

Thought might be interesting to build up a list of stations that have had name changes.  Please add others that you know of.

Some to start.

Dutton Park was originally Boggo Junction, changed 1914.  Junction of the Wooloongabba line from 1884 until 1989.

Wacol was originally Wolston 1874, changed 1928.  Changed to avoid confusion with Wilston.

Gailes was originally Dingo Hill 1919, changed 1925.  Changed because of the new adjacent golf course.

East Ipswich was originally Limestone 1879.  Changed to East Ipswich 1892.

Roma Street was originally Brisbane Terminal station 1875, changed to Roma Street 1889 when line to Central opened.

Fortitude Valley was originally Brunswick Street 1890, renamed Fortitude Valley 2008 following the major upgrade.

South Bank was originally Vulture Street 1893, renamed South Bank 2001.

North Boondall was originally Cabbage Tree Creek 1882, renamed Nudgee College 1911, renamed Boondall 1923, North Boondall upon opening of the Brisbane Entertainment Centre in 1986.

Bethania 1885, renamed Bethania Junction 1888, renamed Bethania 1943.

Corinda 1875, was originally South Brisbane Junction, renamed Corinda 1888.

Eagle Junction was originally Eagle Farm Junction 1882, renamed Eagle Junction 1888.

Ascot was originally Hendra Siding 1882, renamed Racecourse eventually Ascot.

Doomben original station moved further west in 1976 and named Doomben-Whinstanes (merged with Whinstanes), reverted back to Doomben 1998.

So, Roma Street is the original central station then.

All trains run though central the saying goes, and only Roma St meets that criterion.

Nundah, originally named German Station, renamed in 1882 within weeks of opening.

Petrie, originally name North Pine. Renamed about 1911.

Chelmer, originally opened 1876 as Oxley's Point, 1888 renamed Riverton, 1889 renamed Chelmer.

Sherwood, originally named Oxley West, renamed Sherwood 1883.

Ebbw Vale, originally St Helen's, renamed Ebbw Vale 1910.

Taringa, originally West Milton, renamed Taringa in 1875.

Indooroopilly, had a working name of Witton for a short time 1875-79. Both names in use for a short while.

South Brisbane, was first known as Melbourne Street station.  When relocated from the corner of Melbourne and Grey streets to higher ground renamed South Brisbane in 1891.

Shorncliffe, originally named as Sandgate. Appears changed to Shorncliffe late 1940s.

Sandgate, originally named as Sandgate Central.  Appears changed to Sandgate 1950s.

Glass House Mountains, originally named as Glass Mountains, renamed 1914.

Wynnum Central, originally named as Wynnum South, renamed 1931.

Been a lot more name changes than often realised ....

While Meanjin remains a controversial and a hot topic for now, RBOT should press ahead with less controversial station name changes being Central to Anzac Sq and South Brisbane to Cultural Centre. These station name changes along with upcoming changes at Boggo Road/Park Road would improve way finding by specifically naming the stations associated with their correct locations.

I tend to prefer South Brisbane for both the train station and the busway because that is where it is located.

But I can see for the purposes of people travelling to events at QPAC/Theatre, you might name it Cultural Centre, Museum, or QPAC.

In two minds about this one.

Obviously a lot of the name changes are due to the early development of Brisbane, as suburbs were developed, names began to be attached to it officially, usually by developers which then in turn led to a renaming from a local informal name, to an official suburb name with the station then taking up that name, and like with Wolston, that obviously had to change as that was causing confusion with Wilston (Wacol being a name created from linking the words 'Weigh' and'Coal'). 

There are some stations on the QR network that changed due to agitation of the locals in the area, while others are linked to a redevelopment of the infrastructure.  Obviously in the 1800s there probably wasn't a proper formal naming convention at the time, so new stations got temporary names until the area developed properly.

Of my two cents, if anything, Roma Street station should probably be renamed Çentral to reflect the fact that every rail line and long haul bus and rail service will be centred on Roma Street.  I'm in two minds about calling Central Station, Anzac Square though as unless you're a local, you won't necessarily know where Anzac Square is, I'd either call it Spring Hill or Brisbane (technically Central station currently is on the boundary of Spring Hill), I don't think Albert Street will be renamed to Meanjin - that would need to be taken to the local Aboriginal community elders to see if that is culturally appropriate in the first place (I recently completed an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander course at uni and the Lecturer made it clear (who is Aboriginal herself) that it shouldn't be up to white people to decide things that pertain or contain the local language of the Aboriginal communities).  That is, I'm uncomfortable that we are suggesting this to the minister without asking the Aboriginal communities in Brisbane if this is appropriate in the first place. 

Aside from that, it doesn't point out a location of where the station physically is, which is critical for tourists and infrequent passengers, so just on that reason, I'm doubtful that it will end up being called that (especially if the LNP get in after the upcoming election).

In the end though, I don't think there will be much change to the current naming, unless there is more of a push beyond the realm of this group.

The original push for the name change for Albert St station to  Meanjin was not from us, but other proponents who had been in touch with the elders.  I just eventually crystalised it with the Parliament E-petition.  Other jurisdictions are able to do things with a broader vision, Queensland is a backwater.

NSW was able to name their new Sydney Station  'Gadigal' [ https://www.sydneymetro.info/station/gadigal-station ]. 
There are no legibility issues.

The suggestion for the name change Central to Anzac Square has been noted in high places. Again this name change suggestion has been made by many others, plus myself.  It is good to see that Melbourne has Anzac Station on their new metro tunnel.

Roma St will probably stay as Roma St. The touted ' Grand Central ' moniker is cringe IMHO.

Park Road station may change to Boggo Road (as indicated on the SEQ Rail connect map).

Cultural Centre/South Brisbane is still being discussed.

Correct STB. With the political situation being what it is at a state level, they are scared witless to make any real decisions.

I don't intend to spend any more time on station names.

I am also not sure about renaming South Brisbane. Ideally if a train station serves and is within a suburb it should be named after that suburb in my opinion. South Brisbane is a suburb name and it is very descriptive even for non-locals. The confusion with Southbank may be a slight issue, but the latter station is definitely closer to Southbank proper.

The other problem with Cultural Centre as a name as it may not be clear to visitors that it is also the station for the convention centre, which is also a major destination for non-locals.

What are the main destinations at South Bank?
-Streets Beach
-South Bank TAFE
-The Restaurant Precinct

These are all closer to South Bank than South Brisbane.

RAIL Back On Track (http://backontrack.org) has welcomed the name change of Park Road station to Boggo Road.

Robert Dow said that adopting a single name for the station would end 15 years of confusion.

"Boggo Road station is one of the busiest bus/rail interchanges on the network. It's never made sense that the bus and rail platforms had different station names.

"With the future underground Cross River Rail platforms also being named 'Boggo Road', renaming the existing surface rail platforms is the right move.

"'Boggo Road' is a name that's unique to this precinct, whereas there are other Park Roads in Milton, Yeronga and Nundah. There will be a transition period from Park Road to Boggo Road, but after this the entire station precinct which includes the surface and underground rail platforms, and bus platforms, will just be named 'Boggo Road'.

"This name change will help improve legibility on the SEQ public transport network.  This is a very welcome improvement."

Greetings,

Still no ' official announcement ' concerning the recent name change of Park Road Station to Boggo Road Station.

There is no information on the Translink web site concerning the change. Nothing on Translink or Queensland Rail Facebook. We have received a lot of feedback and queries from confused passengers which we have responded to. There is now misinformation out there due to this basic communication failure, e.g. are the dual name platform signs permanent?  Is Boggo Road named after the Gaol? Much feedback as to the lack of any official notification as well.

Not surprising considering the information vacuum from Government. 

Seriously, if the Miles' Government wants to get re-elected they need to treat public transport passengers with some respect, we are not bought off with cheap fares.

To say I am appalled by this Government communication failure is an understatement.  It will not be forgotten.  For the record, I believe that this failure is not the fault of Translink or Queensland Rail.  It is a failure by Government and the Minister of the day, who have forgotten to attend to the basic needs of constituents because they are apparently distracted by petty political games.

Iconic 'Boggo Road' becomes new name for major public transport interchange

. The Miles Labor Government has announced that the transition of Park Road rail station to be renamed as Boggo Road station is now underway.

. The 'new' Boggo Road station will be a major public transport interchange, with Cross River Rail also set to add two new below ground rail platforms.

. Initial signage has rolled out at this location, while further platform signage and computer systems will continue to transition over the next six to 12 months.

Park Road rail station is being renamed to Boggo Road rail station in a move to make navigating the network easier for Queenslanders.

The rail station has now combined with the Boggo Road busway to create a major public transport interchange, Boggo Road station, offering transfers between the Beenleigh, Gold Coast and Cleveland rail lines and busway services at the one station.

The Cross River Rail project will also deliver two new below ground rail platforms at Boggo Road, further increasing the importance of this interchange location.

Customer feedback to Translink demonstrated a preference for a common name at this location.

Translink, Queensland Rail and the Cross River Rail Delivery Authority have worked together on the change, while the feedback from key stakeholder groups has been overwhelmingly supportive.

This week the re-naming began, with initial signage rolling out at this location, while further platform signage and computer systems will continue to transition over the next six to 12 months.

Too right there should have been, information on the Translink Website, Queensland Rail and on the social media.  I can still not find anything official other than the Government's media statement from yesterday. It took a lot of pushing to get that!

I know information on the name changes was prepared for the Translink web site but the publication was waiting for the Ministerial announcement. As were Queensland Rail.

Now, they are trying hard to not embarrass the Minister I guess by not publishing the change information too quickly after the statement.

What a sad place it has all become ...

Consideration of renaming Central Station Anzac Square Station

Greetings,

With the SEQ Rail Connect network when Cross River Rail opens there are changes to the SEQ rail network.  Central Station will no longer be ' central ' to the network, Roma St station will be. Central Station is not central to Brisbane City either. There is a long standing suggestion to rename Central Station ' Anzac Square Station ' or perhaps an alternate ' Anzac Central '. RAIL Back On Track would like to see this possible renaming progressed in the same way as the renaming of Albert Street Station has.  It is worthwhile to note that Victoria named one of its new stations on the Melbourne Metro Tunnel ' Anzac ' in recognition of the nearby Shrine of Remembrance and in honour of the Anzac spirit of "service and sacrifice".

Brisbane's Shrine of Remembrance is located in Anzac square which is adjacent to Central Station.
