Ekka station shut in major blow for annual showgoers

Ongoing CFMEU protests at Cross River Rail sites have forced thousands of Queenslanders to bypass the Ekka train station to get to the annual show for the second year in a row.

A Cross River Rail Delivery Authority spokesman confirmed the new Exhibition Train Station cannot be opened temporarily for this year's Ekka.

"While this news will no doubt be disappointing to Ekka goers, the recommendation was made with safety front of mind," a spokesman said. ...

FREE shuttles and high frequency buses to and from Ekka this year

. Public transport remains the best travel option for Ekka patrons this year with high-frequency bus services and shuttles to and from Herston busway station.

. Free shuttle buses will run between Woolloongabba and Herston busway stations, via South Bank and Brisbane CDB bus stations, and Roma St train and bus station.

. Show-goers are encouraged to plan their journey by visiting translink.com.au, using the Translink app or calling 13 12 30.

Public transport is the best way to get to and from this year's Ekka show with free regular high-frequency buses travelling between Herston busway station and Woolloongabba busway station.

This year's show will run from August 10-18 with Queenslanders again expected to flock to the RNA Showgrounds to enjoy a range of rides, shows, showbags and treats.

The free dedicated shuttles will run between Woolloongabba and Herston busway stations every seven-and-a-half minutes.

They will run to Herston between 8.30am and 6pm, and from Herston between 10am to 11pm every day.

The free dedicated shuttle buses will be complemented by the existing high-frequency scheduled bus services that run to and from Herston station.

From Herston busway station there is walkway access to the Ekka via Brisbane Showgrounds gate 6.

Shuttle services for customers who need assistance will also run between Herston and O'Connell Terrace (gate 5), and between Brunswick Street (Fortitude Valley) and O'Connell Terrace.

Although Exhibition station will not be in operation for the Ekka this year, Fortitude Valley train station is a short walk to the Brisbane showgrounds.

QUESTION:

Will the Minister advise the cost to the Queensland Government to operate free shuttle buses to
the 2024 Ekka?

ANSWER:

I thank the Member for Chatsworth for the question.

The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) offered free travel on event shuttle buses
between Woolloongabba and Herston busway stations to support customer travel to the 2024
Royal Queensland Exhibition Show which ran between 10 and 18 August 2024.

The contract to run these shuttles, including costs, is a commercial-in-confidence matter between
TMR and the operator.
