Mr Neil Laurie
The Clerk of the Parliament
Parliament House
George Street
BRISBANE QLD 4000

Dear Mr Laurie

I refer to petition 3979-23, lodged with the Legislative Assembly on 13 February 2024 about a
request for the renaming of Cross River Rail Albert Street station to Meanjin station.
The Miles Government is delivering its eighth record transport and roads infrastructure program in
a row. The Queensland Transport and Roads Investment Program 2023–24 to 2026–27, which
outlines $32.1 billion in investment over the next four years, which is estimated to support an
average of 25,200 direct jobs over the life of the program. A total of $6.3 billion is committed to the
construction of Cross River Rail.

Once operational in 2026, Cross River Rail will transform the way people travel across the whole
of South East Queensland. With new stations in convenient locations, such as Albert Street, and
the capacity to increase train services as population grows, public transport will become a more
viable option, helping to ease congestion on Queensland roads.

The project provides a second river crossing for the rail network. Not only does this enable
increased frequency of trains across the whole of South East Queensland, a second rail path
through the CBD will reduce congestion, increase network reliability and improve rail as a
customer experience.

Construction is currently underway on Albert Street station, the first CBD train station built in more
than 120 years. When Albert Street station becomes operational in 2026, it will become the main
pedestrian feeder point for Queensland University of Technology's Gardens Point campus, the
parliamentary precinct, the new Queen's Wharf development, an upgraded Eagle Street business
district and the City Botanic Gardens. It will also provide easy access to Elizabeth Street and
Queen Street Mall.

The project is being delivered by the Cross River Rail Delivery Authority and the Department of
Transport and Main Roads with support from Queensland Rail, and all organisations are
committed to acknowledging and honouring the cultural heritage of the land on which the project is
being built in ways that are not only respectful, but also innovative, immersive, and personal.
The naming of public transport infrastructure needs to consider network legibility objectives and, as
much as possible, help orient customers on the Translink network to the locality in a consistent
and practical way, taking into consideration factors such as wayfinding and community belonging
The Miles Government will continue to consider all such factors, including the facts given by
petitioners, when finalising the names of the new stations to respond to community expectations,
ensure network legibility, and provide a strong sense of identity.

I trust this information is of assistance.

Yours sincerely
BART MELLISH MP
Minister for Transport and Main Roads
Minister for Digital Services

Queensland is, and remains a cultural and transport backwater.

No issues with Gadigal Station (formerly Pitt Street Station) in Sydney. https://www.sydneymetro.info/station/gadigal-station

The network legibility spin in the response is a joke.

At least I tried.

RENAMING OF ALBERT STREET STATION TO MEANJIN STATION - Ministerial response

15th March 2024

Greetings,

We thank  Minister Mellish for the response to the E-petition I submitted to the Queensland Parliament.

Ministerial response > https://documents.parliament.qld.gov.au/tp/2024/5724T358-0BB9.pdf

From my personal point of view I am disappointed that the opportunity to do something truly meaningful on the new Cross River Rail network appears lost.

The legibility concerns are nonsense.   No issues with Gadigal Station (formerly Pitt Street Station) in Sydney. https://www.sydneymetro.info/station/gadigal-station

Queensland is, and remains, a cultural and transport backwater.

Best wishes,
Robert

Meanjin

23rd October 2023

Great to note the Sydney Metro (a real metro) is naming the new Metro station in Sydney CBD Gadigal.  RAIL Back On Track has previously advocated for renaming Albert St Station (Cross River Rail) to Meanjin. The Turrbal and Jagera people speak Yuggera and their name for Brisbane is Meanjin.

We have also suggested renaming Central station to ANZAC Square.

We asked our Facebook readers what they they thought?

Results were supportive.

Best wishes,

#Metro

Well, TMR had better remove Central then as there isn't a locality called central, nor a suburb, nor a street in the city, and after CRR Roma St opens it won't be the Central hub either.

And the letter is just symbolic of the Queensland Govt. 90% of the letter is just very heavy non-relevant political marketing spin.
Negative people... have a problem for every solution. Posts are commentary and are not necessarily endorsed by RAIL Back on Track or its members.
