SIGNALLING errors at train stations in Brisbane's northern suburbs have caused major delays to rail services tonight.

Six stations on the Ferny Grove line between Alderley and Grovely were hit with "signalling faults" about 6.10pm, affecting four outbound trains and an inbound service.

Road and rail commuters experienced severe delays and police were called in to deal with traffic conditions.

TransLink replaced train services between Bowen Hills and Ferny Grove with buses until services resumed about 7pm.

A TransLink spokeswoman said a power failure at a central hub caused the outage across the six stations.

She said the signals acted like traffic lights and drivers could not determine when it was safe to depart stations.
