$1bn Gabba rebuild cost plucked from thin air

The initial $1bn price tag for the Gabba redevelopment was based on absolutely nothing, Director-General of Premier and Cabinet Mike Kaiser has said.

The shock revelation comes following a line of questioning on the Gabba proposal by Mr Crisafulli, who asked Mr Kaiser whether the initial advice on the Gabba rebuild, referred to as the project validation report, was written to align with the position of the government at the time.

The $1bn rebuild was first announced three years ago in April 2021 by former Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk who, when asked how the figure came about, said her team was still working out "final costings". ...

No project validation report for $1.6bn QSAC stadium

The government is yet to complete a project validation report for its $1.6bn QSAC stadium proposal for the 2032 Brisbane Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Opposition Deputy Leader Jarrod Bleijie was left stunned after the State Development and Infrastructure Director-General Graham Fraine admitted that, like the Gabba proposal, the government's plans to redevelop the Queensland Sport and Athletics Centre has not been costed through a PVR, also known as a business case.
Mr Fraine said the government was still in the process of completing the PVR. ...

The viability of Brisbane's Olympic and Paralympic Games is under threat from the Premier's controversial plan for the smallest main stadium in more than 100 years.

Brisbane 2032 president Andrew Liveris has for the first time revealed Steven Miles' proposed 40,000-seat no-frills Queensland Sport and Athletics Centre stadium would leave a hole in his $1.29bn ticket revenue target.

It comes as a high-ranking bureaucrat conceded the state government does not yet know how much the plan will cost, beyond a $1.6bn estimate from an independent venue review. ...

Brisbanetimes --> $115,000 a seat: The big cost of a small stadium for Brisbane 2032 $

The $1.6 billion cost of redeveloping the Queensland Sport and Athletics Centre would not be enough to get it ready to host the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, a budget estimates committee has been told.

But Infrastructure Minister Grace Grace insisted any additional costs would not be borne by Queensland taxpayers.

Having abandoned a Gabba rebuild, and rejected a proposal for a new stadium, the Miles Labor government plans to use QSAC as Brisbane 2032's athletics stadium. It would have 40,000 seats, most of which would be removed after the Games.

Under questioning from Deputy Opposition Leader Jarrod Bleijie on Wednesday, Grace said the $1.6 billion pricetag, which remained untested, did not include the temporary seating. ...

ABC News --> Turning Queensland budget estimates into guesstimates ensures the Gabba will remain 'a political football'

Budget estimates became an Olympic sport in Brisbane this week, thanks to a billion-dollar admission from the head of the Department of Premier and Cabinet.

Department director-general Mike Kaiser flipped budget estimates into something closer to guesstimates when asked to explain how the projected cost of rebuilding the Gabba for Brisbane 2032 rose from $1 billion to $2.7 billion.
