The old EMU VAS only seems to be used quite rarely - guards still seem to prefer manual announcements.

Mostly depends on:
1) The driver knowing the codes for VAS1
2) The VAS1 panel actually working in driving cab (which, in reality, would be 50% of the units if you're lucky)
3) The driver actually being bothered enough to set up the VAS1 (which we aren't actually supposed to do anyway).
All opinions stated are my own and do not reflect those held by my employer.

I'm guessing there is a culture of "It's someone else's job" at QR. The logical thing to do would be to take down any old quiet carriage posters whilst doing to the job of sticking up the new stickers...The sticker guy would have a stack of 10 or so spare new posters to do an instant swap out as necessary.
But nope, QR seem determined to do the two tasks separately.

Queensland Rail rules out kid-free carts

QuoteQueensland Rail rules out kid-free carts

QUEENSLAND Rail has ruled out introducing child-free carriages, despite publicly testing the waters on the idea by asking customers to share their thoughts on Twitter this week.

The move came after Air Asia X launched quiet zones on its A330-300 fleet across Australia, Nepal, China, Taiwan, Japan and Korea, providing passengers with the option of sitting in a child-free section.

Despite asking quiet carriage users to express their opinion on the idea, a Queensland Rail spokeswoman said the company was simply generating conversation with rail users.

"We received mixed feedback in response to our tweet. Overall our customers indicated the quiet carriage rules should be followed by everyone," she said.

"Often it's adults who speak loudly in quiet carriages, with one tweeter pointing out many children or school students also enjoyed a quiet train journey."

The spokeswoman said Queensland Rail had no plans of changing its quiet carriage guidelines but was always looking at how other transportation groups were embracing quiet travel.

"Queensland Rail has no plans to change or impose further guidelines on the existing quiet carriage set-up," she said.

Rail Back on Track administrator Robert Dow said he was happy Queensland Rail was not considering child-free carriages, arguing trains were meant to be used by all members of the public.

"From our group's perspective we don't think that would have a very good outcome," he said.

BrizCommuter

Is the quiet carriage a complete failure. By BrizCommuter's scientific testing, yes.

Oh not this cr%p again. I am sick and tired of people whinging about the bloody quiet carriage. It's a courtesy from passenger to passenger. If its too loud then ask them politely to keep their voices down. Otherwise if you don't like confrontation then learn to deal with it. The same with aisle seat hogs. Step up and tell them to move their fat ass if you want a seat instead of crowding the doorways and complaining that someone is sitting in the aisle seat. Same thing if you are sitting behind someone in the middle of peak hour that is being an "aisle seat hog" then a gentle tap on the shoulder and saying "excuse me do you mind moving over to allow people to use the seat". I've done that plenty of times and a lot of the time people simply comply. Relying on the operator to enforce public courtesy is just bloody stupid.

And you are always going to get a high noise level reading from sitting inside an EMU even without people talking. I also find it amusing that using a mobile phone between a couple stations on the same train is now a scientific study.

i certainly dont 8)...seen my fair share of breaches to get the larger picture.....smoking on the platform is worst of them all...

Queensland Rail do a reasonably good job IMHO.  I have had relatively recent experiences both and in Melbourne and Sydney.   QR is at a better standard overall for behaviour and cleanliness and so forth.  The real issue is the feral attitude of many in society today.

Yes, we can all point to various instances of behaviour breeches and so forth, but they are certainly less frequent on the SEQ network than both Melbourne and Sydney by my observations.

Quiet carriages are not perfect, but I have seen them work well too.

I don't think you got the sarcasm of the 'scientific study'.

BrizCommuter is of the opinion that respectful behaviour and tolerance should be exhibited throughout the entire train. As this 'scientific study' shows, the quiet carriage is not quieter than any other, and thus it is a waste of time. QR are better concentrating on reducing overall bad behaviour (of which ICE addicts and middle aged women seem to be the worst) rather than just in one carriage.

In reality, passengers such as families with screaming children (or in the case of BrizCommuter's study, a friendly group of teens with trisomy 21) will just get onto which ever carriage is most convenient. They then don't need to put up with do gooders (who seem to to have forgotten what it is like to have children) bitching at them.

However, when it comes to aisle seat hogs, get the Daleks out!

??? ??? You do know smoking on platforms has absolutely nothing to do with courtesy. For starters its illegal. Talking on your mobile phone isn't.
