Construction of new bikeway connecting Rochedale to Eight Mile Plains Park and Ride Busway, to the Veloway (to the City), to Wishart and to Upper Mount Gravatt

TO: The Honourable the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland

Queensland residents draws to the attention of the House that there is no seamless bikeway that connects the community of Rochedale to Eight Mile Plains Park and Ride Busway, the Veloway to the City, and to the suburbs of Wishart and Upper Mount Gravatt.

This lack of local infrastructure poses a high risk to the safety of bike users when commuting from Rochedale to Eight Mile Plains Park and Ride Busway, the Veloway to the City, to Wishart and to Upper Mount Gravatt.

Bikeway users are required to navigate grass or dirt footpaths, busy, narrow and highly congested Council roads, unsealed paths, heavy vehicles and the dangerous Brisbane Urban Corridor (Mt Gravatt-Capalaba Rd) and busy intersections between these suburbs. This area of the Electorate is an emerging and fast-growing community with many individuals, families and seniors who are active bicycle commuters.

Your petitioners, therefore request the House to do all within its power to urge Brisbane City Council and the MacGregor Ward Councillor to immediately commence community consultation and the allocation of the financial resources needed to construct the new bikeway connecting Rochedale to Eight Mile Plains Park and Ride Busway, the Veloway to the City, to Wishart and to Upper Mount Gravatt.
Half baked projects, have long term consequences ...

I think they're going to have to be more specific. I believe that the Veloway is being extended along with the M1 upgrades currently between EMP and future Rochedale busway station. So tmr can turn around and go "look we did build you a bike infrastructure!"

But I doubt that's what they're referring to. Highly likely they're referring to Miles Platting road which, for the most part until the recent developments, was basically a rural track (and still is in many places along it). I'm all for improved bike infrastructure along there. That corridor could use a better bus service too, it would really take the strain off EMP park and ride

Agreed, there needs to be proper bike lanes along the length of Miles Platting Rd and Rochedale Rd. Priestdale Rd could do with bike lanes as well, Unfortunately the latter would require co-operation between Brisbane and Logan City, so it'll likely never happen.

Are you thinking improved frequency for the 260/262, or something else entirely?

As I was well aware of the future extension of the busway and the bikeway component, I still signed the petition to ensure the need for better active transport infrastructure on the south side of Brisbane.

As the Veloway extension will be on the western side of the M1, any east-west routes from Rochedale/Rochedale South would best align with the existing overpasses - Miles Platting Road and/or Underwood Road, rather than Priestdale Road which would just turf you onto School Road and send you up to the Underwood Road overpass as well.

From memory, Underwood Road does have some sections of verge cycle lanes along it running along it, including over the new bridge itself, and is much less of a goat track than Miles Platting Road is so it might actually be an easier option to continue the cycle lanes along it. Miles Platting Road doesn't even have curb and channeling along most of its length, so I don't see bike lanes going in there until the entire road is upgraded (which I believe will be needed sooner rather than later, but who knows when it actually will happen).
