World-Class Second Sunshine Coast Motorway Project

ROADS Back On Track (http://backontrack.org) a web based community support group for roads and private transport and an advocate for private motorists has welcomed the Nation Building Authority (NBA)'s assessment of the Second Sunshine Coast Motorway Project.

ROADS Back on Track welcomes the NBA's very favourable evaluation of the project, having granted it "election ready" status and placing it on the Priority Infrastructure List. The NBA found the project had a benefit-cost ratio of negative 0.5 and was a national priority as "the train line up there isn't coping, people are driving instead".

The new motorway will branch from the existing Bruce Highway at Beerwah State Forest and travel ten kilometres before ending short of Caloundra. No actual connection to the Sunshine Coast local road network will be made however; rather a convenient 1000-space park and ride will be built at the Caloundra end instead (cost $50 million). After parking their car, motorists will seamlessly connect to a high-frequency 'turn-up and go' two-hourly shuttle bus (last service scheduled at 4.45 PM, no service weekends, public holidays or during rain events) to connect with a local Sunshine Coast car rental shop where motorists can hire another car to continue their onward journey.

Modelled after Adelaide's innovative Southern Expressway the new motorway will consist entirely of a single road lane, with traffic lights at either end. The new motorway will have a final capacity of two cars per hour. Safety features, such as traffic-light controlled passing bays strategically placed every two kilometres will allow cars travelling in opposite directions to avoid head-on collisions.

Due to the winding alignment and mixed traffic considerations such as people walking their dog, riding their horse, pack cycling and jogging, speeds will be set at 15 km/hr on the new motorway.

The Minister for Information and Social Media hailed the project as a win-win for the Sunshine Coast's 400 000+ residents and said that the Department of Roads, Roads and more Roads (RR&R) had conducted extensive community consultation over two years. Public submissions for the project were open between 31 December 2020 and 01 January 2021.

"This government is absolutely committed to improving transport for the Sunshine Coast. We have set aside $2.00 in the upcoming government budget for printing costs associated with gazetting the corridor."

"This world-class project will be delivered on budget and on time." the minister said.

A particular completion date for the project has been set but cannot be discussed publicly as this information is considered commercial-in-confidence. Interested journalists are encouraged to submit an RTI request for consideration.

A sod-turning ceremony will occur at Beerwah State Forest tomorrow 01 April 2021.
