Couriermail --> New bike path built on the Brisbane River

CYCLISTS will literally be able to ride on the Brisbane River, with council revealing new plans for an above-water bike path.

The proposed Indooroopilly bikeway will connect the existing Western Freeway bikeway at Indooroopilly to the UQ bikeway at St Lucia.

New plans show the project will include a cycling and pedestrian bridge that will stretch along the Brisbane River from Witton Rd at Indooroopilly through to Foxton St near the Walter Taylor Bridge.

A second bridge will then link Foxton St to the Witton Barracks, where cyclists will be able to travel towards the UQ bikeway via Lambert Rd.

The new above-water bikeway would separate pedestrians and cyclists from motorists driving along the narrow and windy Radnor St.

Deputy Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner, who chairs Council's public transport committee, said the project would significantly boost the safety of the 700 people who ride or walk along Radnor St every day.

"Radnor Street is notoriously intimidating for active travellers and this new bikeway will be a welcome addition to help local residents get to work or school more quickly and safely," he said.

"Thousands of cyclists use the Western Freeway Bikeway, Brisbane River Loop and UQ Bikeway every day and this new bikeway will form an important connection for residents getting active in our outdoor city."

Brisbane City Council first floated the project in May last year.

Detailed designs will be completed midway through this year, with construction expected to begin next financial year.

The project is yet to be costed, but it is expected to be funded from a $100 million pool of money set aside for cycling infrastructure to be built before 2020.

Residents can provide feedback via an online survey on Council's website, while three information sessions will also be held this month.

A solution is well needed. This idea seems reasonable and will connect people to Chapel Hill and Kenmore more safely too.

That walkway should be great for photographing the 4 bridges.

Best of all, planning is already under way to better link the riverwalk section and the M5 bikeway.

I wont be able to make the opening on the Sunday morning, but likely to check it out later that day or on the following day to take pics etc...

This new connection will make it easier to cycle to Kenmore from Indooroopilly. They just need to sort out a better connection from Marshall Lane to Kenmore Village. They do have a local road connection via Cedarleigh Road to Kenmore Village. Moggill road is very narrow and busy in-between Kenmore Village and Kenmore Central at Marshall lane. They shouldn't be encouraging cycling along Moggill road in-between those two points.
