Couriermail --> Brisbane commuters less happy than those in other capitals

QuoteBRISBANE commuters are less happy with public transport than those in other Australian capitals.

Nielsen research, commissioned by the peak body Tourism and Transport Forum, found 71 per cent satisfaction with the system here.

That is lower than Sydney (83 per cent), Melbourne (80 per cent) and Perth (75 per cent).

Only Adelaide (67 per cent) and Hobart (47 per cent) rated lower than Brisbane.

Some 86 per cent of local passengers think governments should invest more in public transport infrastructure and services, with six in 10 believing more and cheaper public transport is the best way to reduce traffic congestion.

Tourism and Transport Forum chief executive Margy Osmond said: "What we are seeing is that the majority of Queenslanders are happy with their public transport services. However, the survey results also tell us that they are looking towards the future and understand the importance of investing in infrastructure and innovation.

"With major projects like the Cross River Rail and the Brisbane Metro well under way along with the upgrade of the public transport card I would expect these results to improve in the next few years."

But Robert Dow of commuter advocacy group RAIL Back On Track said the Brisbane result was disappointing and showed more work was needed to bring services up to scratch.

"This result reflects what we know — we have poor service frequencies on rail and buses outside inner Brisbane and ongoing issues with fares. We need to be up around Melbourne and Sydney levels."

The research also shows more than half of Brisbane passengers use their commute as down time, checking social media, listening to podcasts or surfing the net.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said a record 49 million trips in southeast Queensland last year showed passengers were voting with their feet.

"We want to continue to improve public transport in Queensland, and deliver the best rail services in the country.

"That's why we're delivering the $5.4 billion Cross River Rail project, funding the Sunshine Coast rail duplication and backing Gold Coast Light Rail Stage 3A."
