60 minutes big Australia segment

Quote
Australia is growing at more than twice the rate of America, the United Kingdom, and even China. Many politicians and economists say big is not only beautiful but essential, and that a booming population fuelled by immigration will guarantee our future prosperity. However, that is a difficult argument to cop for everyday Aussies crushed by endless development, congestion and overcrowding.

^^They really picked the extremes Dick Smith and the progressive planner. Is like interviewing
Pauline Hanson and Sarah Hanson-Young.

It's quite obvious by 2050 we will have close to 50 million people

Infill is the right way to go within the first 10km radius of the CBD as well as around transit hubs.

Electric regional rapid rail, to make it a reality to live in regional hubs, as planners have already put forward.

We just need to get a lid on air pollution and ensure our water ways remain clean, as well as the seas and oceans surrounding them. Brakes need to be put on land clearing as previous clearing has lead to environment disasters and uncontrollable land and soil erosion.

p.s. When Dick Smith mentioned Geneva as 1 million; He forgot to add that it's within a close proximity of a 300 million trading block with a modern industrial base and welcomes millions of tourists per year. That's why it can sustain such a small population.

Australia would need to build hundreds more international airports to even match the tourist inflow of medium sized European cities. Hence we need a larger population to keep the wheels turning on our economy to improve our standard of living.

The taxi driver sitting in a traffic jam is just a result of poor transport infrastructure planning and slow implementation of infrastructure projects.

Your clearly blinded by the progressive bug verbatim.....only ever seeing progressiveness but blinded by any problems that may arise in trying to get there....you also seem to think that we have a current crop of politicians that will be able to keep on top of this growth.......even though the current political spectrum is in one of its most volatile periods ever....multiple prime-ministers in such a short space of time is testament.

Well there are the ones who only see the negatives.....an eye for an eye..

https://population.org.au/about-population/population-myths

Dick smiths affiliated party......see the other side for once......after you have read them....start by counteracting every response that they have listed to those myths.

and for further insight...

https://www.macrobusiness.com.au/

LVO dedicates the majority of his time researching the negatives of rampant population growth.....constantly debunking the think tanks,corporate/government bodies and big business/politicos/journalists whenever they sprout the positives.

couple of recents...

https://www.macrobusiness.com.au/2019/03/award-australias-worst-immigration-spruiker-goes/

And last but not least you really do need to realise that in such a capitalist society the major beneficiaries of stuffing in more 'human capital' will always be the ones at the top.

More tax for politicians to keep their retirement coffers full...
Big business get to weather the effects of increased competition and future disruption..

In closing...if you must toe the 'big Australia is necessary' line.....then best you get used to the terms 'basic living wage' or 'socialism'.
And we do not want to end up like....

^^We didn't go through multiple prime minister's because of population growth, clearly there were other factors.

Plus you are clearly trying to push your own political ideology on this thread.

I never stated the previous 4 were directly voted in/turfed out on population growth.....
I'm talking about the stability aspect.....when a new party leader takes command in a spill for example....there an at least 50% chance that the previous incumbents policies/plans will be adjusted/binned......entire new cabinet appointed/adjusted.......that is NOT stability it is volatility....and infrastructure can come under direct threat from that volatility......that on top of opposing parties chopping and changing infrastructure plans.....it diminishes the progress in getting stuff built.

Besides....take a look at the tunrbull fiasco.....straight up as soon as scomo got in he instantaneously hires a population minister and began the policy of shifting people to the regions.....you cannot sit there and say population growth didn't play some sort of part in turnbull being ousted..

The only solution to this mess is to enact longer terms and/or leadership spill policies...

Leith's an economist.

Economists have no function other than to tell you why things cost what they cost.  They aren't magical polymaths.  Among other things, he has been exceptionally strident in his criticism of spending on public transport.

So what if he isn't industry accredited in said subjects he blogs on....theres no 'masters of population growth' needed here.
Hes an advocate....nothing more...nothing less...but this advocate only focuses on the negative effects of high population growth...and seems to be doing well enough to regularly appear on mainstream channels.
Hes just another cog in the chain.....the bigger worry are the ones motivating him...

HappyTrainGuy

Using the mainstream media isn't a great example when you have people like Harold Scrubby from the pedestrian council wanting pedestrians fined for wearing headphones, bikes limited to 10kph and Motorsport banned because it encourages speeding.

the ones pushing for stuff like that are triggered way too easily....political correctness masquerading for their own form of progressiveness.

An oldie but a goodie ..

There were a Chemist, and Engineer and an Economist stranded on a desert island ..

They had one can of baked beans but no obvious way of opening it ...

The Chemist suggested if we scratch the lid, it will rust and then we can open the can ...

The Engineer suggested if we light a fire and put the can in it, the contents will expand and the lid will open ...

The Economist suggested that if we just imagine that we have a can opener and then we can eat the beans!    ???

Half baked projects, have long term consequences ...
