BRISBANE: Central, Ipswich, South Brisbane, Cannon Hill, Beenleigh,Caboolture and Strathpine railway stations have been revealed as the worst for assaults on the Citytrain network.

Figures obtained by City News after a five-month Freedom of Information investigation reveal 114 assaults on the 143-station network in the six months to the end of March.

Ipswich train station rated worst with seven assaults, five of which were serious enough to cause visible bodily harm such as bruising or swelling, while another indicated an assault on police.

Six assaults were reported for South Brisbane train station, five assaults for Cannon Hill station and four assaults for Beenleigh, Central, Strathpine and Caboolture stations.

Commuters are also facing a high incidence of drunken or nuisance behaviour at Central station, with 55 good behaviour offences usually involving offenders being caught in the act by police.

More than half of the 114 assaults across the network were serious assaults, including assaults against police on duty.
Police Operations Support Command Commissioner Alan Davey said the number of offences were minuscule compared to the number of police hours spent patrolling the rail network.

The railway line is patrolled by 54 police officers, private security and 110 transit officers, who are expected to be given police powers, including the power to detain, by late this year.

According to the City News in depth article (City News 11 Sep 2008, page 16-17), most assaults happen between 3 and 7pm.
Interesting, although most of the serious assaults that have been reported in the media have happened much later.

Must be the latest news going around to bag the railways as the Herald Sun in Melbourne had a similar story about violence on trains

I would urge everyone not to get their nickers in a knot just yet, these are only figures, they don't represent any increase or decrease since previous years, you can get assaulted anywhere in the city!
