Before the new arrangement of the fare gates at central, I hope everyone understands the way the fare gates work.
Entry into a station is TOUCH ON only, and exit is TOUCH OFF only.
Say if you were to enter through the gate and then realise you've forgotton to touch on, you must then exit through the gate again (don't touch your card yet) and touch on at the side you would normally enter the station. If you were to touch on at the reverse side, you would automatically cop the $5 fixed amount because it thinks you're exiting. Then when you touched your card off at your destination, you would be stung again with $5 because it would be counted as a start of a new journey.
Hope this helps everyone avoid donating $10 to the TTA fund because, you guessed right, it's counted as a user error and you don't recieve a refund for this.
Happy travelling!

seems pretty common sense to me.  i presume this kind of error will be harder to make in future as more people are using the cards and you have to walk through a closed gate in order to incorrectly touch out when in fact you mean touch in, simply cos you've used the wrong side of the gate. this isn't an issue with the posts at suburban stations of course!
