Couriermail --> Queensland electoral redistribution: Maps of new seats leaked online

QuoteNEW seats have been created in Ipswich, on the Gold Coast, Logan, north of Brisbane, north Queensland and on the Sunshine Coast in a major shake-up of the state's electoral boundaries.

The most dramatic redrawing of the state's electoral boundaries in decades had been due to be announced tomorrow, but was leaked online by the Fairfax Regional Media-owned North West Star this afternoon.

Maps of the redistribution show several seats have changed boundaries and names, and some have disappeared altogether, including the seats of Indooroopilly and Dalrymple.

The new seats include Ninderry on the Sunshine Coast, Bancroft north of Brisbane, Jordan in Ipswich, Bonney on the Gold Coast, and Hill in north Queensland.

Seats to have been renamed include Mount Isa, which has become Traeger, Glass House, which will be renamed Tibrogargan, Sunnybank, which has been renamed Toohey, Yeerongpilly, which has been renamed Miller and Mt Coot-tha, which has been renamed Maiwar.

Ashgrove will be called Cooper and Brisbane Central will be renamed McConnell.

Dalrymple has been absorbed into three north Queensland seats, with Burdekin renamed McMaster.

We should expect to see Emerson vs Miles in Maiwar.
That Courier Mail article implies that Maiwar is the continuation of Mount Coot-tha, but it also contains the majority of Indooroopilly.

Couriermail --> Analysis: Queensland Redistribution Commission smashes electoral map

QuoteTHIS, as one senior Labor figure last night aptly described it, is "mass carnage".

The Queensland Redistribution Commission hasn't just rejigged electoral boundaries.

It has smashed and reshaped the electoral map.

The introduction of four additional seats, in concert with a shift towards the coast and a surge in the southeast corner's population, are the catalysts of the carnage.

No party is unscathed, except maybe One Nation.

Environment Minister Steven Miles will be pitted against Opposition treasury spokesman Scott Emerson in perhaps the biggest clash of personalities. Miles may have to be parachuted into another electorate.

Opposition frontbencher Dale Last may have to take on Katter's Australian Party's Shane Knuth.

Labor factions will fight over the new seat of Bancroft north of Brisbane while LNP will have the same issue in Bonney, squeezed into the centre of the Gold Coast.

Meanwhile, long-serving MPs like Labor's Jo-Ann Miller and the LNP's Ted Sorensen sit in seats that suffered little change while Generation Next members of both parties face the scrap heap.

The parties were quick to say it will all be sorted. But make no mistake, the implications run deep and they affect every faction and alliance.

This will be a test of both Annastacia Palaszczuk and Tim Nicholls given the obvious threat to careers across the electoral map.

Meanwhile, Pauline Hanson will just plonk One Nation candidates no one has heard of into seats and carve significant support off both parties.

The next election will be when the real carnage occurs.

Any hope for the end of "Queensland's worst transport minister ever" political career?

The seat of Maiwar incorporating Indooroopilly and Mt Cootha with Green preferences I reckon it will go to Labor at next election!? Steven Miles may jump to a safe Labor seat in another district? Will Scott Emerson stay?

QuoteSTATE Environment Minister Steven Miles has not ruled being parachuted into a safe seat after his electorate of Mt Coot-tha morphed into a newly named seat of Maiwar.

The change means his former electorate would be joined by Indooroopilly under the new Maiwar banner, pitting him against Opposition treasury spokesman Scott Emerson.

"Clearly my job is far from done," Dr Miles said this morning, before heading out on a snorkelling trip on the Great Barrier Reef, off Cairns.

Antony Green reckons Maiwar is about 3% LNP now vs Labor.

Greens in with a chance in a good year.

Andrew Powell has a tough choice.  Stay with new seat of Tibrogargan (old Glass House) or switch to Nicklin.  He will be living in the re-drawn seat of Nicklin.

Come the next election, there will be some interesting interplay when it comes time to hand out presents to the voters.  Tibrogargan reportedly has become a more marginal Labor seat.  The Beerburrum-Landsborough North rail duplication project now straddles the new seats of Tibrogargan and Caloundra.  That portion of the line within Tibrogargan stretches from Beerburrum to south of Beerwah.

Powell will be robbed of his favourite talking point -- the SCL duplication because, whereas most of the track to Nambour was in his old electorate, only the bit to beyond Glass House is in Tibrogargan.  He might have to switch his focus to PT links to Woodford and Upper Caboolture, which have been included in Tibrogargan.

Tibrogargan, a redrawn Caloundra and Nicklin will all be in play for the major parties at the next election, which the Premier has confirmed will be fought on the new boundaries.  Voters on standby for the duplication promises.  :bna:  :ttp:  :fx

I like how the seats have been renamed to reflect Aboriginal language. "Maiwar" in Aboriginal refers to the "Brisbane River" but "Cootha" from Mt Cootha now maiwar referred to "Honey Bee".

QuoteLabor's Environment Minister Steven Miles is planning to relocate to the electorate of Murrumba to contest the next election because of boundary changes that will see his current seat of Mt Coot-tha merge with the LNP-held seat of Indooroopilly.

He's cutting and running!

Brisbanetimes --> Electorate tweak saves retirement home being split in two

QuoteThere will be only minor changes to the proposal to shake-up Queensland's electorates.

The Queensland Redistribution Commission published its final determination in the Queensland government gazette on Friday morning.

It comes after rounds of consultation and outcry by some over changing boundaries and the names of electorates and scrapping seats.

The re-drawing of boundaries includes boosting the number of seats in Parliament from 89 to 93.

Under the final determination, there will be some boundary tweaks to the changes originally proposed to electorates by the Commission earlier this year, including Buderim, Kawana, Noosa, Gympie, Gregory, Cook and Hill.

The commission also reversed its plan to transfer Palm Island to Hinchinbrook - it will be retained in Townsville.

A submission had pointed out the plan meant a retirement village was split in two by the proposed boundaries between Waterford and Macalister - it will now be contained within Waterford.

Changes were also made after commissioners became aware that an area with relocatable homes along the Nerang River on the Gold Coast were split between Gaven and Southport - the boundaries are changed to keep them within one seat.

Despite objections, the proposed boundaries of Callide, Warrego and Gladstone were retained.

The commissioners said they were aware of the opposition to the removal of Shane Knuth's electorate of Dalrymple and the extension of Robbie Katter's seat of Traeger, previously known as Mount Isa.

"While the commission appreciates these concerns, the Act sets clear and binding enrolment requirements that must be adhered to," they wrote.

In February, Mr Knuth argued the plan to scrap his seat of Dalrymple was a way to get rid of minor parties.

Despite accepting the argument that Charters Towers shared more with the Burdekin electorate than Traeger, it could not be changed without "huge disruption" to other seats, and it was not fair to make wider changes without more public consultation, the commissioners said.

Changing names of electorates was a bone of contention for many people, and the commission accepted that a few of the proposed names should not be used.

The electorate names of Burdekin, Glass House and Pine Rivers will be retained - instead of changing to McMaster, Tibrogargan and D'Aguilar.

However, Brisbane Central will be renamed McConnel, Cleveland will be renamed Oodgeroo and Albert will be renamed Theodore.

Industrial Relations Minister Grace Grace had campaigned against the change and member for Albert Mark Boothman said the name Theodore could get confused with a Chipmunks character.

The commissioners argued it was difficult to understand why the name of one suburb should be preferred as the name of the electorate over others.

And changing electorate names to reflect people rather than suburbs was better when future boundary changes were required, they argued.

The commissioners said the four new electorates were needed in the growth areas of the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Ipswich and the area between Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast.

Additional changes were proposed in areas where growth was waning or increasing, with two extra electorates created, bringing the number to six.

After considering feedback, the commissioners said they were confident with the placement of the six new electorates.

There will now be a 21 day appeals period, after which the final boundaries are considered final and cannot be changed until the next redistribution.

The new boundaries will come into effect when the writ for the next general state election is issued.

The production of Queensland's electoral roll will take up to 90 days.

For more details, read the full determination, see the district maps, and check how it affects you by viewing the 93 electorate maps.
