WA transport minister Dean Nalder on Monday released a video to provide an insight into what will be the second biggest station on the Transperth network: the station at the new Perth Stadium.

Train passengers who will be attending events at the new Perth Stadium in Burswood have been given a first look at what the future Stadium Station will deliver.

Nalder released video animation of the station, which is part of a $358 million integrated 'smart transport solution' for the new Perth Stadium that encompasses public transport, pedestrian and cycling infrastructure.

Nalder said the animation provided an insight into the sheer scale of the project.

"This Government has developed a strategic, well-designed, and well-managed plan which will see 83 per cent of stadium patrons use public transport," the Minister said.

"The station will allow up to 28,000 people to leave the site by train within an hour of an event ending.

"Stadium Station and its associated rail infrastructure is the major artery that will allow people to enjoy one of the biggest entertainment infrastructure investments ever made in this city."

The animation shows the station's six platforms, building design, entry and exit locations, as well as the surrounding road and rail modifications required to link the former Belmont Park site to the Armadale Line ...

Trains are the best way to efficiently move large groups of people. Following a capacity crowd at Perth Stadium, 28,000 people are expected to leave from the new Perth Stadium Station and 7,500 people from an upgraded East Perth Station.

To do this, work will be completed to:

    build a new six-platform Perth Stadium Station, at the former Belmont Park site, to allow one train to depart approximately every two minutes
    build nearby stowage for up to 117 railcars to keep a continuous flow of trains following events.
    build additional stowage between Great Eastern Highway and Victoria Park Station for four six-car trains.
    upgrade East Perth Station to accommodate additional passengers on event days.
    upgrade other areas of the rail network to accommodate the larger numbers.

The rail works commenced in August 2015.

A COMMITMENT to provide free bus and train transport to AFL games at Perth Stadium looks likely to kick a multimillion-dollar black hole in the state's already parlous finances.

A Government spokesman confirmed yesterday that an annual subsidy of $7 million, allocated by the previous Liberal-National government to provide free travel to the footy from 2018, was nowhere near enough.

The spokesman said the cost of providing free public travel to the football, funded by the taxpayer, could now be millions more than was anticipated.

The Government was now looking at how to make up the shortfall.

"Currently at Subiaco Oval the direct costs of special-event public transport services are fully cost recovered through charges to event organisers," the spokesman said.

"The previous government approved a discount so that only 50 per cent of the costs of planned Perth Stadium sporting fixtures would be recovered from event organisers with half the remaining costs to be picked up by the taxpayer.

"An additional annual subsidy of over $7 million was disclosed in last year's budget. The (Labor) Government estimates that the cost of providing public transport services for a capacity crowd at AFL matches at the new stadium will increase by about three times, compared to AFL matches at Domain Stadium.

"The 50 per cent subsidy in last year's budget was under-funded and not adequately costed."

Currently, a ticket to the football covers travel on all Transperth services for three hours either side of the game.

The Government spokesman said yesterday there were currently no plans to remove the free travel.

Going to the football by car will almost be a thing of the past when the new stadium opens next year.

Fans will be encouraged to go by train, or buses taking people to and from a new footbridge at East Perth.

The capacity of the stadium is 60,000.

Seems like a well-planned event. Meanwhile, in Queensland, where there are genuine concerns about the adequacy of public transport serving the Commonwealth Games and no timetables yet for the event, the Games' chief's advice is to 'suck it up'.   

On an app that virtually all condemns, are we going to see messages like: "Expect delays and crowding on Gold Coast Line trains.  Suck it up."
