Queensland Rail denies its city railway stations are closing  early and unexpectedly because of staff shortages, leaving communters vulnerable.

The Citytrain network has come under fire from the Rail, Tram and Bus Union, which said a number of stations wer being left unmanned because the operator had called in sick or hand been relocated.

QR executive general manager Paul Scurrah said: "QR does not have a staff shortage at stations on the Citytrain network.  Decisions on what stations are temporarily unattended ... in no way compromises safety."

Rail Back On Track's Robert Dow said commuters were often unable to buy tickets when stations were unmanned and ticket machines were not working.
