It has three lifts and associated stuff, platforms raised. New footbridge, removal of ped x etc.

Local road works and sewerage and drainage.

There has also been other changes to signalling track etc.

I wonder if all the above was also included ... :P

Thank you for the Open Day at Wulkuraka

Good Morning,

Thanks to all involved in putting on the Community Open Day at the new Wulkuraka (New Generation Rollingstock) Maintenance Centre yesterday, the 13th February 2016.

It was an excellent day and the response from the community was amazing.  There is a lot of interest in the improvements that are now proceeding for our rail network.

I don't think the recently upgraded Wulkuraka railway station will experience such crowds for a while, but the extra train services were certainly put to work!

Thank you to the Minister for Transport Stirling Hinchliffe and the DG TMR Mr Neil Scales and their staff,  for making this a day that we will all remember.

Congratulations to all involved with the construction of the facility and the station upgrade.  It is an excellent facility.

Best wishes,
Robert

Wulkuraka - New trains!!

Greetings,

Today there is a community open day at the Wulkuraka Maintenance Centre.  This is where the new generation rollingstock will be maintained.
It has been very interesting observing the transformation at Wulkuraka, including the station upgrade. We are grateful for the opportunity to visit the centre today.

The first of the new trains is about to arrive in Brisbane.  It is presently on the ship Matsumae off the central Queensland coast.  Exciting times.

There is one aspect that needs review though.  Originally the number of 6 car trains that was to be obtained was a 100.  This was reduced to 75 six car trains, with a further option for 25.  We think the option for the additional trains needs to be exercised sooner than later. The position of the guards in these new trains will be at the rear of the train.  This will mean some changes in operating practices.

At last we might be starting to turn a corner.  We need to significantly boost our rail system in SEQ if we are to manage our transport needs as a community.

See you at Wulkuraka!

Best wishes
Robert

Queensland Parliament Hansard: Ministerial Statements

https://www.parliament.qld.gov.au/documents/hansard/2016/2016_02_23_DAILY.pdf

New Generation Rollingstock, Wulkuraka Maintenance Centre

Hon. SJ HINCHLIFFE (Sandgate—ALP) (Minister for Transport and the Commonwealth Games)
(10.00 am): I am proud to advise the House that the $4.4 billion New Generation Rollingstock, or NGR,
project is delivering hundreds of jobs for the people of Queensland. I am delighted that this project has
generated almost 500 design and construction full-time jobs for Ipswich and Brisbane during the
construction of the Wulkuraka maintenance centre and ongoing delivery of the NGR. This will include
131 management, design and commissioning positions and 215 construction jobs created at the
maintenance facility at Wulkuraka. The Palaszczuk government made a commitment to creating jobs,
and that is what has been done. Some 150 ongoing full-time jobs have been generated to continue
servicing the trains at the maintenance centre over the next 30 years. The flow-on effect of this
multibillion-dollar investment in Queensland's public transport landscape will help stimulate the local
Ipswich economy and further deliver an estimated 1,500 indirect jobs. As of 30 November 2015, almost
60 per cent of the current workforce at Wulkuraka maintenance centre came from a 15-kilometre radius
of Wulkuraka. This contract to maintain the rollingstock at Wulkuraka is for 30 years, which means at
least three decades of job creation for South-East Queensland.

Queensland Rail is also currently in the process of recruiting 100 full-time train drivers and 100
guards.
The Bombardier NGR consortium has a local industry participation plan that is audited every
six months and reviewed by this government. At the last audit in September last year, Bombardier
reported that it had engaged in more than 200 contracts with Australian businesses—89 across
South-East Queensland and 13 across regional Queensland. The 75 new trains will be delivered over
a three-year period and are expected to be operational by the second half of 2018. The NGR project
represents a significant investment in trains and will support the government's long-term commitment
in public transport, delivering for the people of Queensland now and into the future.

Wulkuraka Maintenance Centre wins national award

The $4.4 billion New Generation Rollingstock (NGR) project has won a national award for the design and construction of the project's Maintenance Centre at Wulkuraka.

The project won the Smart Infrastructure Award at the IPA National Infrastructure Awards ceremony in Sydney overnight.

The Queensland Government project is being delivered under an Availability Public Private Partnership (PPP) with Qtectic.

The NGR project team implemented state-of-the-art Building Information Modelling (BIM) software for the design and construction of the Maintenance Centre, which was completed six weeks ahead of schedule.

BIM software provides a single 3D design model used by both design and construction teams. It provides a seamless bridge between the teams, delivering more coordinated and reliable output.

Laing O'Rourke, who led the design and construction of the Maintenance Centre, should be congratulated for their use of BIM on the project. This was the first time that BIM had been used on a project this large in TMR.

There was significant potential for design clashes and programming conflicts on a project of this scope. There were often more than 200 construction staff on-site during construction – with more than 50 separate contractors and subcontractors engaged during the 18 month construction period.

Taking this potential complexity into consideration, the design and construction teams decided that BIM would be the best system to make sure they got it right the first time.

Right from the initial scoping and planning stages, all of the design and construction team updates were regularly consolidated into a single BIM model where all changes were easily identified, tracked and managed – providing opportunities for improvement to the design.

The single design model facilitated the integration of engineering elements - Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing – with civil and structural elements. This resulted in the identification of over 3,000 clashes between the structure, underground drainage and in ground services during the design phase. The identification of these clashes considerably reduced delays to construction from potential design-related issues.

A genuine construction management benefit was also realised through use of GIS Data embedded within the BIM model for 3D earth moving machine guidance.

By using BIM, the Maintenance Centre was able to be simulated through a range of different techniques, including fly-throughs, walk-throughs and activity sequencing. Safety procedures were developed by using the building model to simulate the implementation of the processes concerned and effectively creating a digital method statement for specific processes.

The benefits derived from BIM have been tangible on the design and construction of the NGR Maintenance Centre, and contributed to the successful and early delivery of the project.

My congratulations go to the NGR team for winning this prestigious award.

Visit the NGR web page for more project information.
