Extended transport and parking for Christmas in Brisbane

Enjoying Christmas shopping and attending festive fun will be easier from this week, with a raft of discounted parking and extended public transport options, Lord Mayor Graham Quirk announced today.

"Christmas in Brisbane is family-friendly experience with over 150 free events, as well as world-class retail options in the CBD and suburbs, and Council is making it even easier take advantage of everything on offer," Cr Quirk said.

"This year Brisbane City Council is trialing a new extended bus timetable over the Christmas period, to make it easier for people to take advantage of extended retail trading hours and free evening Christmas activities.

"Indooroopilly, Garden City, Carindale, Chermside and the CBD will be serviced with additional bus trips from 19-23rd December.

"These services will cater for people who shopping right up until midnight, either in the CBD or at major suburban shopping centres, or out enjoying the City Hall Lights Spectacular.

"The extended timetable information will be available on Council's website and from Translink."

Cr Quirk said the Council was also offering a 12 Days of Christmas parking offer through Council's free on-street parking app, delivered by CellOPark Australia.

"Brisbane motorists who sign up to the CellOPark Australia parking smartphone app between 1 and 12 December will receive a $10 credit for use at all on-street Council parking spaces before the end of March 2017," he said.

"This is a great reason to sign-up to the free app, which allows motorists to conveniently pay only for the time that they park, and not a minute more. Existing CellOPark users will also receive the $10 free credit."

Cr Quirk said that Council had also teamed up with several CBD private car parking operators to provide some great offers to motorists at off-street car parks.

"Council's car parks at King George Square and Wickham Terrace is just $5 per day on the weekend or on week nights between 4.30pm and midnight. King George Square also has a $20 Early Bird Special for those who want to spend the day in the city," he said.

"Additionally, Wilson Parking's Eagle Street Pier is offering a $15 Park 'N' Party option for Friday and Saturday nights while Secure Parking is offering parking from $5 and up to 70 per cent off at a range of locations in the CBD and South Bank.

"It is recommended to check conditions with the different operators and often the best deals can be booked online."

Brisbanetimes --> Extra late night Christmas buses for Brisbane

Extra late night buses will operate in Brisbane to help with the extended Christmas shopping hours during December, lord mayor Graham Quirk has confirmed.

Brisbane City Council at its full council meeting on Tuesday approved around extra bus links between the CBD and the major city suburban shopping centres.

The extra late night buses will operate as a trial for Christmas 2016 and the number of bus services could be expanded in 2017 if they are popular, Cr Quirk said.

"We have decided as a trial run this year, but I'm sure if they become popular, we'd look at making it a permanent thing next year," he said.

The State Government last month extended late night shopping in the lead up to Christmas 2016 and Brisbane City Council.

The extended shopping hours begin on December 1.

However, the extra late night buses will run from December 19.

Brisbane City Council will add extra "outbound services" along 23 routes – listed below – from December.

"That includes bus routes to and from Garden City, Wynnum, Boondall, Bracken Ridge, The Gap, St Lucia, Moggill and Heathwood," Cr Quirk said.

"These services will allow passengers to move from the CB D to these suburban centres and to further suburban destinations from there," he said.

Brisbane City Council has decided to fund the new routes by itself – at a cost of just over $19,400 to cut short complaints that there was not enough public transport when the shopping hours where extended.

Cr Quirk welcomed the extended shopping hours for Brisbane.

"I hope that the additional trading hours will be successful this year and will continue, he said.

"I've talked in the past about my desire to wider trading hours in the CBD on an ongoing basis.

"Any global city, or emerging global city, needs to look at the trading hours and extend them in the CBD as long as possible."

RAIL Back On Track thanks Brisbane City Council for the trial of a new extended bus timetable for the Christmas period, to make it easier for people to get around and do their shopping and social commitments.

We have advocated for such a thing and are delighted that Lord Mayor Quirk,  Deputy Mayor Schrinner and Brisbane Transport staff have delivered  extra bus services.
