Our major cities may be struggling to cope with traffic flows, but that shouldn't necessarily be interpreted as a sign that car usage is on the rise.

According to Peter Newman from Curtin University, we've already reached what he calls Peak Car, with vehicle usage in major western cities now on the decline. But unless we start adjusting our traffic projections accordingly, says Prof Newman, civic authorities will end-up wasting valuable infrastructure dollars while missing opportunities to redesign our urban centres for the future.
