Innovative trials for customers with disability to navigate the public transport network

Monday 03 August
A trial version of a new app which helps our visually impaired customers more confidently navigate Sydney's public transport network is now available on Android devices.

Stop Announcer allows the customer to enter their preferred route, and the app then provides audio announcements as their service approaches each stop.

It's like a personal train guard announcement in your pocket!

The app informs the customer when their destination stop is next, giving them time to prepare to get off the bus, train, ferry or light rail.

Routes that are used frequently can be saved for quick access and the app works throughout the Sydney metropolitan region and regional NSW.

The app is still in trial phase because we want feedback from customers about what works and what doesn't. Customers are encouraged to use the app and provide their feedback during the six weeks. Any feedback and ideas for improvement will be fed back to the app developer to enhance the app's features before a final version is launched to the public.

Feedback can be submitted by calling 131 500 or online at transportnsw.info.

In addition to the trial release of the Stop Announcer app, Sydney Trains will initiate a wayfinding trial for customers with a visual impairment at Town Hall Station.

The trial involves the combination of Bluetooth beacon devices and a wayfinding app which we hope will help customers navigate the station based on audible cues.

The Town Hall Station trial will begin in mid-August.

Both the trials are part of Transport for NSW's commitment to deliver high quality services to all customers including those with disability.

Stop Announcer is available on Android devices only for now. Download the app for free from the Google Play store.
