An extra eye on security: staff safety cameras trialled in Australian first

NSW Minister for Transport and Infrastructure Andrew Constance today announced that personal safety cameras will be trialled on selected NSW TrainLink services to help improve safety on regional trains.

NSW TrainLink staff will be among the first public transport employees in Australia to wear the devices that have the ability to record anti-social and dangerous behaviour.

"We're trialling this technology with the aim of reducing incidents that could harm staff and customers or make them feel unsafe," Mr Constance said.

"The small cameras are wearable and can live-stream images of incidents to a central control room for an immediate response from authorities if necessary."

Recordings of passenger disruptions will be provided to police when required as well as being used by NSW TrainLink staff for training purposes following onboard incidents.

"Regional train travel is a great experience for our customers and we want to make sure these journeys are as pleasant and as safe as possible," Mr Constance said.

NSW TrainLink has spent the last few months looking both domestically and internationally at what techniques and technology are available to support staff when dealing with anti-social behaviour.

The trial will roll out to an undisclosed number of services and will be monitored over the coming months to determine if the technology is adequate for use on the rest of the NSW TrainLink network.
