The Morning Bulletin --> Electrification of Bauhinia rail line complete

QuoteAURIZON'S Bauhinia Electrification Project is being wrapped up, with the project boasting a string of firsts - including a German operating system never before used in Australia.

Aurizon general manager of major projects Mark Greener said having the first electric train on the Bauhinia line was a "fantastic achievement", and the new operating system would bring great economic advantages.

"It's the first (time) we've been able to install a system called a static frequency converter," he said.

"It was really just from an engineering and operation point of view to look for the most state-of-the-art technology that could provide cost-effective, reliable power systems."

The plant will be remotely controlled from either Rockhampton or Brisbane. Mr Greener said it would be watched from Germany as well.

The electrification of the Bauhinia line started about 16 months ago, and Mr Greener said local workers were used whenever possible, usually hailing from the Emerald and Rolleston areas.

Central Highlands Regional Council Mayor Peter Maguire said the project would assist future developments.

"Obviously any project where we can enhance the economic sustainability of the region, no matter which sector, is fantastic," Cr Maguire said.
