Attention State DOTs and MPOs! Are you still planning and funding the widening of freeways? Be forewarned that widening may not and usually is not the solution.

Biggest Freeway Widening Boondoggle of 2015:

"...After the freeway was expanded to 23 ridiculous lanes — making it "the world's widest" highway — at a cost of $2.8 billion, traffic actually got slower: 30 percent to be exact."

It might be worthwhile to rethink "it has already been planned and funded so we need to construct" mantra so you don't become the next boondoggle.

California Department of Transportation and UCDavis' Susan Handy did research to demonstrate and debunk most of the myths for why State DOTs and MPOs fund freeways. Ready Susan Handy's Policy Debrief.
