Extra buses ensure safe nights out this Christmas

26 November 2014

Brisbane residents will enjoy safer nights out in the Christmas party season with more bus services and pick up points being made available in the CBD and Fortitude Valley.

Transport Minister Scott Emerson said 426 additional NightLink bus services will operate from December 5 to December 21 – doubling their frequency and making it easier and safer for passengers to get home after a night out.

"These extra late-night bus services are part of our strong plan to make Queensland the safest place to live, work and raise a family," Mr Emerson said.

"At this time of year, more and more people are out celebrating the end of the year with friends, family and colleagues and these extra services will mean more transport options for passengers.

"We want Queenslanders to have a good time – and then get home quickly and safely."

NightLink services will also expand into new areas such as Jindalee, Riverhills and Red Hill and further extend into existing suburbs such as Mt Ommaney, Ashgrove and St Lucia.

Mr Emerson said the extra services will run every weekend from December 5 until the last service on Sunday, December 21.

"NightLink services currently depart every hour from around 12am until 5am, but will increase frequency to every 30 minutes during the festive season," Mr Emerson said.

"We're also making permanent improvements that will mean passengers can get off and on at any designated bus stop the NightLink service passes."

Mr Emerson said these changes follow two new late-night bus services launched last month that area already proving popular for passengers.

"Only the LNP is delivering more transport choice for passengers travelling at night after Labor failed to increase the NightLink network at all during the last eight years of their government," Mr Emerson said.

The extra public transport services will be delivered through the Newman LNP Government's Safe Night Out Strategy, which aims to reduce alcohol and drug-related violence in designated entertainment precincts.

Due to the changes, some bus routes will be renumbered. For more information please visit translink.com.au or call 13 12 30.

Success! I guess TransLink was listening when I floated these ideas: http://railbotforum.org/mbs/index.php?topic=10752.0 James is very happy with these proposed changes.
Is it really that hard to run frequent, reliable public transport?

Ahh yes, only an LNP government can make the sun come up in the morning and go down in the evening.  A vote for Labor will commit Queensland to eternal darkness.  I think that is what Mr Emerson is saying.

They think that is true, just depends on if their leader is standing upright or bending over  :-r

Yo, he spun a lot of bull about no delays in the TTCC issuance process.  Seems to be getting pathological ...

Little wonder that the punters' respect is heading west ...

Numerous other examples:

- Gold Coast Nightlink routes (N22, N750 and N798) which ended up in the form of the current N732 and N750

- Additional Route 700 services after hours (15 May 2006) replacing the old 1/1A 24-hour services.

- CityGlider (funded principally by the State even though it was led by BCC)

The man has no shame at all and should be called on it.

The opposition has been made aware of the misinformation in the statement.

One expects honesty in all statements.

The N310 runs every 1.25 hours from 12am to 3:45am.

Letting people get on along the route is a great idea. Why was it not always this way? North of Toombul on the N310 it will still be drop-off only though.  ???

What has got our attention is the claim in the statement that:

' "Only the LNP is delivering more transport choice for passengers travelling at night after Labor failed to increase the NightLink network at all during the last eight years of their government," Mr Emerson said. '

NightLink was increased many times during the last 8 years of the former ALP Government.

For example: Web archive https://web.archive.org/web/20081211054356/http://servicechanges.translink.com.au/db/servicechange.php?id=216

Perhaps if the Newman Government concentrated more on fixing the failed fare system, and sorting out the failed bus review rather than mediocre attempts to score political points we would all be better off.

I also note that as at 2.45am 27th November 2014 the Statement does not appear on the official Queensland Government Media statements at http://statements.qld.gov.au/Search?q=emerson

Have a great day!

Best wishes
Robert
