Only Labor Will Extend The Rail Line To Mernda

September 25, 2014

An elected Victorian Labor Government will extend the South Morang train line to Mernda, Leader of the Opposition, Daniel Andrews announced today.

Mr Andrews joined Shadow Minister for Public Transport, Jill Hennessy, Labor Member for Yan Yean, Danielle Green, Labor Member for Mill Park, Lily D'Ambrosio and Labor Member for the Northern Metropolitan Region, Jenny Mikakos, at South Morang station to announce further major investment in public transport.

Many aspects of the project are still to be finalised, however, the following components will feature as part of the design:

Eight kilometres of new duplicated track from South Morang to Mernda.
Full grade separations with no new level crossings.
A new station at Mernda and provision for additional future stations.
One additional station between Mernda and South Morang at a location to be determined in consultation with the community.

This extension is only possible due to the decision by Labor to fund the duplication and extension of the Epping Line to South Morang in 2009.

Quotes attributable to Mr Andrews:

"The time has come to extend the South Morang line to Mernda to cater for the significant growth in population in Melbourne's North."

"Labor's commitment will significantly increase the number of local people using public transport providing better connections to employment, education, healthcare, entertainment and retail."

Quotes attributable to Labor Member for Yan Yean, Danielle Green:

"Doreen and Mernda have grown from 19,000 people in 2011 to now being almost the size of Shepparton, so this rail extension is a no brainer for Melbourne's North."

"Labor's commitment will bring much needed local jobs in Yan Yean, tackle congestion and kick start the much needed Mernda Town Centre – it's a great day for the local community."

"Labor is serious about investing in public transport unlike Denis Napthine and his $8 billion dud tunnel."

Key Facts:

The project will commence within the first term of a Labor Government.
The project is estimated to cost between $400-600 million.
The extension will increase the length of the South Morang Line by around 30 per cent.
Labor has committed to reducing Zone 1+2 fares to a Zone 1 level from 1 January 2015.
