Premier Bligh stole Minister Mickel's thunder with her announcement regarding the new Go card fare structure which is more than welcome, even if the figures are somewhat slanted, there may have been 70,000 cards issued or handed out but the actual figures of numbers in use is considerably lower, in fact about half.
This new fare initiative will no doubt considerably increase the numbers actually using the Go cards.
The problem will be will the rail system be able to cope with the increased patronage brought about by the rise in fuel costs, increasing congestion on the roads and now the option of public transport now being made more attractive because of the new fare structure for the Go card.
The new congestion busting trains are on the way, despite the fact that six of the new sets are complete, the first two sets are only now commencing acceptance trials over three months since their release from the builders and will not enter service for possibly another month raising the question will these additional sets bring about an immediate increase in the number of services operated to cope with the daily increasing numbers of commuters or will Mr Mickel now delay their effective benefits untill September and a new timetable?
The Ipswich and Shorncliffe lines are both in need of additional services and Ferny Grove would benefit by the removal of existing express services and an increase in theservice frequency.
But more trains require more crews and in places more tracks, four tracks all electrified from Corinda to Darra with a third track to at least Redbank.
The completion of the Springfield line with all stations as a matter of urgency, a start on the underground loop from Dutton Park to the Exhibition line and that frequently discussed Petrie to Kippa-ring.
Progress is being made but the momentum needs be maintained, an election is comming so pressure on you local member may motivate the required results.
