First of the new electric trains arrives in Adelaide

Adelaide's first A-City Class 4000 electric railcar has arrived at the Seaford Rail Depot. A further two, of the final 66 cars, are due to arrive next week to complete the first set of three that will be used for intensive on-track tests and evaluations beginning next month.



"This is a momentous step forward in the electrification of Adelaide's metropolitan rail network," Mr Koutsantonis said.

"Like many South Australians, I have been keenly looking forward to the arrival of the first electric A-City 4000 rail cars.

I hope commuters who have patiently endured substitute bus services since January will be excited when they begin to see the first of the A-City rail cars being track tested during the next few months.

This commissioning phase is required to ensure the new Seaford line has all the necessary approvals in time for the launch of our first electrified commuter services in the New Year."

The  A-City Class trains, reaching a maximum speed of 110 km/h, are the first rail vehicles in Australia designed to meet stringent new international crashworthiness standards as found in Europe and the U.K.

"The A-City Class has been designed to meet the harsh conditions of South Australia, with high capacity air-conditioning and safe weatherproof walk-through access between railcars," Ms Fox said.

Electrification of the Noarlunga line and Seaford Rail Extension is now entering the final stages with the new line expected to be operational later this year and electric train services expected to commence between Adelaide and Seaford early next year.

In addition to this, $152.4 million has been allocated over three years to electrify the Gawler line from Adelaide to Dry Creek and build a new electrical substation at Kilburn, complementing recent track upgrade and station upgrades along the Gawler line at Elizabeth, Elizabeth South, Gawler and Munno Para.

Apparently 4005 (3 car) is finally complete at the depot.

Five 3 car trains in 6 months, our new trains will only take 15-16 years at that pace.

Hopefully the Indian factory is faster than the Melbourne one....

NGR was supposed to be up with testing in late 2015 to early 2016 but with the delays they should now be mid to late 2016.
