Brisbane will be the only State Capital without trams/light rail.   Probably never will.  I expect a fully fledged metro eventually ...

Trams?!? I can see the Lord Mayor spewing at the idea already...
Never understood why BCC wants to continue the Clem Jones heritage. BCC would be able to do vastly less damage and waste if it ran a tram system and not the buses as trams are stuck to the road, are expensive, this would have forced only simple, legible and efficiently routed services to be run and make it almost impossible to run "gimmick" services.

However, things can change as can the colour of BCC.   Who knows what is in store for future Brisbane political leadership?

As Cr Dick pointed out in a cryptic way, nothing much really came from the last one ...

I listened to the Consultant (yes Consultant hence CRR 2033 I guess) that did up this latest effort.  Some good ideas, support more green bridges.  More connected bus routes and so forth. 

Plans are plans.  They will be modified, perhaps even ignored in the end, but it all helps to get some sort of focus.

Interesting the plan also talks about changing the cityglider fleet to a unique new type of highly legible vehicle.

BulimbaGlider Excluded From Brisbane City Council's 2013 Draft City Centre Master Plan

Greetings,

Why is the inner-city suburb of Bulimba excluded from transport upgrades in the Brisbane City Council's 2013 Draft City Centre Master Plan?

Within the master plan, there is a transport section which states:

"Workers, residents and tourists will glide along the city streets, moving quickly and conveniently between employment hubs and popular destinations. We will establish more routes, to more places, more often."

Except Bulimba. No BulimbaGlider features in the plan. Why?

Is the reason why Bulimba is so consistently excluded because the local sitting councillor is the wrong political stripe?

Also concerning is the statement (p141) :

"Establish new bus operating patterns to meet future demands, including: (a) investigate the rationalisation of bus routing to improve frequency and legibility"

Brisbane City Council needs to explain why on six occasions it barred its own staff from meeting with TransLink during the TransLink bus review, and why after not one but TWO bus reviews in one year the network is still not rationalised, legible and frequent.

Is it because the BCC bus review was deficient and defective as evidenced by the fact that it has no new high frequency bus services to Bulimba/Morningside, the Centenary Suburbs, Yeronga and the Northwest as proposed by TransLink? Why has BCC been unable to deliver these upgrades as proposed by TransLink?

Maybe it is time the State Parliament moved  to alter The City of Brisbane Act 2010 and strip BCC of all public transport functions. The Lord Mayor and BCC can no longer be trusted to run Brisbane's buses or ferries. After a decade of games, it's time to dump Brisbane City Council and separate Brisbane Transport.

What's the point of the citygliders, really? 

It leaves me wondring if it means BCC is aware of BT's failings and are trying to create a seperate network.

Brisbane Transport is not a corporation. It is a division of Brisbane City Council, which means that there is no independent board but just a divisional manager that has a CEO-like role that heads just that section of staff. As far as I know BT does not have an ABN, but uses the BCC ABN.

It would be interesting to see what the tax status of Brisbane Transport actually is given that it doesn't appear to have a separate legal identity to that to Brisbane City Council. They seem to be one and the same. Question is, does Brisbane Transport pay GST and Tax or are they exempt unlike private operators? Councils are not corporations either so would also pay no tax. They're devolved bodies from the state and seem to be a bit like state departments in this regard. Neither of these two factors has appeared to keep down either ticket prices OR subsidies.

My theory is that the CityGliders, with their gigantic BCC logo and 'INITIATIVE OF BCC" is partly transport and partly BCC political advertising through the suburbs in the same way that in the run up to elections there is a flood of public service advertisements.

A pedestrian bridge linking Kangaroo Point with the Brisbane CBD is set to move a step closer next week.

The highly anticipated cross river connection is one of six priority projects identified in Brisbane City Council's 20 year vision for CBD development, the City Centre Master Plan 2014, which is expected to be approved at Tuesday's council meeting.

The transformations of the Howard Smith Wharves precinct and the Queens Wharf and William Street area into river's edge destinations, along with the creations of green spines in Edward Street and Albert Street, have been identified as priority projects, along with the bridge.

However, an expansion of Brisbane's high frequency City Glider bus network, identified as a priority in the draft plan released last year, has now taken a back seat to the highly publicised underground bus and rail tunnel.

Priority project delivery will be dependent on funding from either the private sector or other tiers of government.

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk said the council was focused on working with stakeholders to deliver the priority projects in the short term.

"These projects will further enhance the face of Brisbane as a vibrant city and will provide new directions for council and businesses to invest in," he said.

"For example, our vision for Albert Street is that of a lush landscaped street with increased street dining to help enhance this precinct as a bustling pedestrian space with a leafy character."

In announcing the draft plan last year, Cr Quirk said though the plan outlined council's vision for the city over the next 20 years, he hoped priority projects would be delivered within five years.

"Within the City Centre Master Plan we have outlined our strategies for guiding economic, cultural, infrastructure, public space and transport systems in the city centre in line with forecast growth and coupled this with real projects we are proposing for the future," he said.

Funding models for the projects are:

Howard Smith Wharves: Council, state/federal and private sector;

Queen's Wharf and William Street precinct: Council, state/federal and private sector;

Kangaroo Point bridge: Council and state/federal;

Albert Street and Edward Street: Council and private sector.

Opposition Leader Milton Dick said council was "irresponsible" to release a plan without any funding having been committed.

"The people of Brisbane have been waiting since 2006 for these large and small scale projects because a previous version of the same plan only delivered a redesign of King George Square," he said.

"Brisbane City Council can't afford these projects without accruing more debt or increasing rates and charges.

"It's all well and good to have another glossy report with lots of futuristic designs, but it's irresponsible to promise that they will be done in five, 10 or even 20 years without an idea of how to pay for it."

Isn't BCC's Master Plan to split up bus services heading in the same corridor by having lots of separate bus routes all travelling through different parts of the CBD, with the aim of causing as much frustration and confusion to bus passengers as possible?
