The Auditor-General, an independent Officer of Parliament, is the external auditor of both the state and local government public sectors in Queensland.

The independence of the position, enshrined in law, means the Auditor-General, and staff of the Queensland Audit Office (QAO), have unfettered access to all government entities, and can examine and report to Parliament on the efficiency and effectiveness of any aspect of public sector finances and administration.

The Queensland Audit Office (QAO) supports the role of the Auditor-General of Queensland in providing Parliament with an independent assessment of the financial management-related activities of public sector entities.

Our role is to provide independent audit services and Reports to Parliament to enhance public sector accountability.

It is an offence for any public servant to impede the Auditor-General or his staff carrying out their duties.  AG can demand any file, and it must be produced.  AG is answerable to the Parliament, not to any minister.
