IT cost $24 million to build but a bridge across the new Ipswich Motorway leads to nothing more than a patch of grass.

Bizarrely, among the 500,000 tonnes of asphalt that was trucked in to build the Dinmore to Goodna section of the Ipswich Motorway, none was found to complete an important link between the highway and Brisbane Terrace.

The bridge that crosses the railway line between Redbank and Goodna stations, linking the motorway service road to Brisbane Tce, is complete all but for a short, 30m section on the Brisbane Tce side, which will be funded by the developer of a new industrial estate at Redbank.

The unfinished section of road - known as the Monash Rd upgrade - has been heavily landscaped with gardens and a large amount of drainage rock, leaving some people wondering if it will ever be finished.

It comes as a disappointment to interstate transport company owner Allan Pollard, who said he moved to Redbank last November to take advantage of the new infrastructure.

The bridge will form a safe link to the motorway - unlike the existing overpass further south, which he said was dangerous for heavy vehicles.

"We have been hanging out for this new bridge to open," Mr Pollard said. "I just can't believe that they spent so much money on the turf and gardens when they could have built the road instead."

Minister for Transport and Main Roads Scott Emerson joined Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale in voicing his concerns about the amount of money wasted on gardens and other landscaping that will only be ripped up once work on finishing the connection to Monash Rd gets under way.

"This was done under the former Labor government and I have asked the department to ensure this kind of financial mismanagement is not repeated," Mr Emerson said.

Ipswich City Council confirmed this week that completion of the final section of the bridge hinged on the developer being able to complete contract arrangements.

A spokesman for the developer, Goodman Australia, said there was at least 12 months work in building the intersection where the bridge would connect with Brisbane Terrace.

The Monash Rd upgrade will include the installation of traffic lights at the intersection of Brisbane Tce and Monash Rd at the developer's expense.

Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale said the link would complement the new industrial estate planned for the area.

"It's our bridge to nowhere at the moment," Cr Pisasale said.

"The big issue we have is with the landscaping that has gone in there - they could have given us the money they spent on landscaping and we could have finished the road."

So the land developer is 12 months late in doing their connecting infrastructure while the State did its works when doing other infrastructure upgrades.  Sounds like a beat up to me.

The northside had a "Bridge to nowhere" for years at the Narangba industrial estate over the Bruce Highway.

That was never connected at either end until a few years ago (no estate east of the highway at all) and was good forward planning.

The new one to go in north of Anzac Ave, from North Lakes to connect to Alma Rd, has had to be sent back for redesign as they didn't make it high enough over the highway.....

Initially it wasn't connected to the Eastern Side but they completed that back in 97ish. It was utilised by deros that burnt stolen cars there and trial bike riders who frequently created a dust storms across the highway. It wasn't until a decade later that they fenced off the properties when the first of the properties were bought and construction started.

A DA to build a huge warehouse in the Redbank Motorway Estate was submitted to ICC two weeks ago on behalf of DB Schenker. This estate is to be accessed using this bridge.

What is ridiculous is that ICC refused to spend the money to complete the approaches and reimburse themselves for the money spent when the developer deposited their contribution.

Too caught up slavishly adhering to precious process.

Queensland Times --> 'Bridge to nowhere' is now going somewhere

THE "bridge to nowhere" will soon be leading to Ipswich' latest industrial park, as developers of the Redbank peninsula edge closer to finishing the construction of Monash Rd.

An announcement is expected later this month by the Ipswich City Council and developers Goodman Australia regarding an international company leasing nine of the site's 62 hectares.

The QT revealed last year a bridge was built to allow access to the industrial park, but not enough bitumen was provided and a 30m stretch of road was left unfinished.

The unfinished stretch of road was heavily landscaped leading some people to ask whether the road would be complete.

Goodman Australia has been working to construct the road and it is now weeks away from being complete.

A Goodman Australia spokesman said work has commenced on $27 million of infrastructure works at Redbank Motorway Estate.

Goodman is the second largest industrial developer internationally and the largest in the country.

The company is expected to make an announcement with Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale in the coming weeks.

Cr Pisasale said the announcement will mark the beginning of the Redbank Peninsula industrial park.

He said the industrial development had been 18 months in the making and will deliver jobs for Ipswich.

"We've been working on this project for a while. It's a world renowned company and the bridge to no where will now become the bridge to somewhere," he said.

Cr Pisasale said although the unfinished bridge caused a stir, its intention was always to improve Ipswich's industries.

"The bridge was built to attract people, but they are investing a significant amount of infrastructure. This is the start of the industrial park," he said.

Cr Pisasale said the Ipswich region holds 43% of Queensland's available industrial land.

"What makes a great city is making sure families have jobs," he said.

The Department of Infrastructure and Transport report into the future of south-east Queensland forecast more than 56,000 jobs will be created in Ipswich's central suburbs by 2026.

It remains true, for there to be a silly stand off is ridiculous. It's not like ICC has a cashflow problem, they should have spent the money connecting the bridge as soon as it was completed.
