Downer EDi hasn't decided on bid for Middle East project

QuoteDOWNER EDi has not yet decided if there are any opportunities for its Maryborough facility to contribute to a 1200km international rail project that will connect countries throughout the Middle East and Europe.

Queensland Premier Campbell Newman, during a trade visit to the United Arab Emirates, met with Etihad Rail, the group behind the project, to promote Downer EDi as a potential contractor.

Despite the talks, Downer Group rail division vice-president for strategy Danny Broad said on Thursady the company was aware of the Etihad Rail project but had yet to decide if it would have a part in it.

"We are aware of a lot of projects like this," he said.

"It's still a long way off."

Mr Broad said the Downer Group worked with its partners for big projects such as Etihad's to see if there was opportunity.

A representative of Mr Newman told the Chronicle earlier this week the Premier had taken an active interest in the project.

"We'll be doing everything we can to get behind Maryborough and welcome the job opportunities that would follow," the representative for Mr Newman said.
Half baked projects, have long term consequences ...
