For some reason though when you click the forums link it makes it open in a new tab.

Designed to work that way.  Keeps the main page open for people not familiar with the forum structure etc.

It can be a little intrusive, especially on mobile when you don't want to many windows open...people can always hit the back button, as they would with any other website to get back to that home page.

If i want the choice  to open a page in a new tab i just right click the link>new tab, or shift click to open in a new tab.

Yes, good point about mobiles.  Easily fixed.   Done. Reload the page to see the change.

Another option, at the top of the forum, just put the same row of green links as a bar along the top:

Yes, would be good.  Leave it with me, will take a bit of coding though ...

No go.  It will break the code because the domain index page is under style and will also interfere with page collapse when narrowing.

It is fine as is.  Once you start tampering with the board code itself gets a bit tricky.
