Not beyond the bounds of possibility that a federal election could be the outcome of this spill ..  independents no longer support the PM, lose a vote of confidence, off to the polls we go ...

Don't know if Rudd will have the numbers, but to have this level of dissatisfaction within the governing party should mean that the GG should (some how) pull the plug and let the people decide after which the PM can lead the govt with confidence and focus on running the country.
Completely within the legal power of the GG at present, AIUI.

The governor general can sack any minister.

Will they ever?  Absolutely not.

Sacked all of them in 1975.  Unlikely to be repeated though.

Julia Gillard is a disgrace and telling the opposition to 'take their best shot' just makes her look weak.
Together with dumping the media laws and being humiliated by a noble Kevin Rudd (who we all know probably does have the numbers), and having the opposition get their glee at attacking het credibility, it's been a very bad day for Labor and I highly doubt their popularity will improve upto the next election.

I thought it was a smart tactical move by his opponents.  Showed he didn't have the numbers to even take a chance.
