A TRAIN has derailed, spilling 21 carriages worth of zinc concentrate west of Townsville.

A Queensland Fire and Rescue spokeswoman said the train derailed about 8.15am Sunday, 70km west of Townsville near the Flinders Highway.

The train was carrying zinc concentrate and 21 carriages have tipped over.

It is understood the clean-up from the incident will take several days.

A Queensland Ambulance spokesman said no one was injured in the incident but paramedics will remain at the scene to monitor fire crews at they clean up.
