The Honourable John Mickel

Mt Lindesay Highway park n ride allocated $3 million

Three million dollars has been allocated in the 2008-09 Budget to start work on the $4 million park n ride facility on the Mt Lindesay Highway corridor at Park Ridge.

The funding is included in the $13.6 million TransLink Station Upgrade Program for regional public transport infrastructure across South East Queensland.

State Member for Logan and Minister for Transport, Trade, Employment and Industrial Relations John Mickel said the program would focus on public transport infrastructure, fund new bus stations and bus rail interchanges across South East Queensland and upgrade existing facilities.

"Big-ticket transport projects, like Brisbane's world-class busway network, often get most of the attention when we talk about new public transport infrastructure," Mr Mickel said.

"But it is equally important that the local facilities where people go to catch their bus or train are world class as well.

"The new park n ride at Park Ridge will pro vide 200 car-parking spaces for local residents, delivered as part of the Mt Lindesay Highway upgrade.

"That will make it much easier for residents in the Park Ridge area to access bus services in the Mt Lindesay Highway corridor.

"The new facility will also include a two-bay bus platform for Mt Lindesay Highway services.

"The funding in this program will be used to improve facilities all over South East Queensland including new bus stations and bus/rail interchanges, park and ride facilities and better safety and security at bus and rail stations.

"It will also fund new facilities for cyclists at stations and new infrastructure for special events like the Robina Transport Hub at Skilled Park."

Other projects that will be funded in the 2008/2009 Budget include $1.5 million for an upgrade of the Greenbank RSL park n ride.

Mr Mickel said the suburban projects that would be built under this program would provide significant benefi ts to the network.

"New facilities like park n rides can significantly alter commuter behaviour by making it easier to access public transport.

"Likewise, an upgraded suburban bus station that is more accessible may remove the final barriers preventing some people from leaving their car behind and catching a bus. "
